Ron Nelson and John DeSoto, the two American winners of the Inter-Am moto cross series, 500cc and 250cc class respectively, were sent to Europe to compete In tbe F .I.M. international moto-cross series. The main contributors to help send these two young mota-cross riders to Europe were KIm KImball and Dan Gurney r1 Montesa.Ron and John wlll be provided with motorcycles by Montesa and Kimball and Gurney are providing vans for each of tbe riders when tbey arrive In Europe. Hoppy Hopklns will spend several weeks witll tile boys In Europe showing tIlem some of tile necessary details whlch must be taken care of in order to get starts. A great deal of money was needed to do this, and we ~ It is a fine gesau:e on tbe part of Gurney and Kimball to send these two fellows "across tbe pond." We hope otllers wlll have tbe opportunity to go to Europe It tbey perform as well as these two fellows did In last year's series. We understand tbey will be comIng back with tbe Europeans and starting In Beverly, Mass. and wlll follow the moto-cross series across the U.S. again this year. It wlll be very interesting to see how tbese two Americans do against tbe Europeans OB tbeir home ground. Of course, I do not feel they Should be unjuslly crltlclzed It they donotwlne1'VYthing In sight. We must remember tbey are competing against the world's bestnot only riders but equipment. Montesa Is dofug everything tbey can to have tbe highest standard of equipment and are also sending a mechanic along to help tIlem. However, many factories have several mechanics and several machines for each rider at every event. As those of you know who !lave ridden moto-cross, It Is not only tile man but the machine as well, that makes for success. Let's hope tbey have a sutttcient amount of equipment to be able to compete on the same basis as those tIley are com p e tl n g against.
