Roberts, #7 on a Husky tuned by Tracy'S of Burbank, claims two 1969 desert wins In a row by taking this ninety-nine-mlle Hare Scrambles. The sand was damp from the overnight rain and the sky was dark with rain clouds. The big bikes were prepared to go three loops on a thIrty-three-mlle course running clockwise through the mountains, and the lOOCc's would go twice around. The starting area was in open boondocks laced with busbes and a few rocks, but bad plenty of trails leadIng to the smoke bomb three miles out. After the smoke, the course ran for three miles througb a rocky sandwasb, turning right into a narrow mountain canyon where the trail went rhough a series of up-and-down cliffs about torty feet high, with a COuPle of wild downhills thrown In for some added excitement. A narrow hogback dropping off on each side widened Into open boondocks and onto a fast trall where a large ramp bad been put uP at the railroad crossing to make a wild jumP. A deep dltcb then unloaded quite a few of the eager riders, and another open boondock trail brought us to a wide, rocky sandwash that kept you on your toes at top speed. ThIs eventually crossed back over the railroad tracks, and a twisting fire road finished off the last five miles hack to the pits. It was.deflnltelya handling course, as opposed toa fast road-racing course. At the smoke bomb, Bill Harry, #25x on a 2liO Bultaco had the lead, and John Lloyd #188x, a bot Amateur also on a BUltaeo, was running second. By the end of the first loop and coming into the pits you could see that Roberts was now In the lead on his eight-speed Husky, with his headligbt 00 (he was checking It out for the up-coming Mint 400 Race). ChasIng him was Larry Bergquist, #lx on a 250 Bultaco, and as Roberts was first to Pit, Bergquist led It througb the pits. Gary Conrad, #163 on a Husky, was in third. On the second loop the lead did not change, but Mike Patrick, #48x on his 250 Yamaha, was starting to move uP and was now sitting in fourth spot. The third and final loop was really rough, as there was super traction in the damp sand. It was "stand up" all the way, as the bikes bad dug deep chuckholes In the trails so that sitting on the seat to rest was Impossible. Roberts came in for the win with his headlight broken, and was followed by Bergquist, Conrad, and Patrick, In that order. Tom Muto, #5x OIl a 250 Busky. was fifth. Ray Alexander, #39x, took eighteenth overall and first 250Amateur on a Bultaco, followed by second 250 Amateur John Lloyd, #lB8x. Eric Jensen, #7l7x on a 125 Sachs was next. Huskymounted Dennis Keefe, #547x, took first 250 Novice on a Husky In twenty-first overall position. Bill Waters, #105. was first 500 Amateur on a Husky. Ricky Shirley, #158, took first 500 Novice astride a Buitaco. The lOOCc's went off ten minutes after the big bikes, with John Coots In the lead at the smoke on a Penton. Jack Morgan, #1 on a Hodaka was second to the smoke, followed by Hugb Glpe, #19 on a Sachs. Morgan was able to pass Coots In a sandwasb, and Glpe bad a disagreement with a rock whlcb put him out of the running. By the end of the first loop Morgan was stl1l In the lead but the follow-uP spots went to Jeff Wrlgbt, #15 on an S.S. Hodaka, Gary Gr.iffln, #23 on a Zundapp, Dean Goldsmith, #24 on a Harley Davidson, and Mark Rader, #28 on a Hodaka. Only 150 yards separated these five fast-moving riders, and they held a five-minute lead over the next group of competitors. The lead changed many times on the second and final loop, with all fiVe boldIng the Number One spot at least once. Griffin ran into some trouble which put him out of contention, but the battle continued rigbt uP to the finisb llne, where Morgan finally got a 100-yard lead ov.er Goldsmith, who took second, and Wright, who took third. Rader pulled In fourth to make First Amateur honors. D. Lundberg tonk Second Amateur, bolding down seventh spot, and Claes NIlson, #696, was first Novice on a Penton. J.R. Arts, #100, was second Novice on a Hodaka. The Sid 'winders laid out a well-marked course with all their checks placed In just the rlgbt spots, to make our third desert run of the year a big success. ThIs speaks very highly for a club. (Results on page 16) OREGON BEACH, Ore. - The first pleasant weekend in quite a whlle greeted the Mt. St. Helens M. C. for their tinal scheduled moto-cross of. the winter season. Sand was the word for the event, and plenty of It; It made it plenty tough for the l25's. The 250' s were the big class of the day, all running at once over thelrregular terrain, and though the deep sand caused more than the normal amount of spills, the racing was quite good. In the Open class Richard Saddler whom we haven't seen In competition quite some time, gave the ole master Dick Jagow a tough battle for the number one spot. Saddler, t1n1shlng second.looked as though he hadn't lost a bit of the 'Slug' Saddler style from the past. As the day wore on, the tidal waters from the Columbia River began to flood part of the area (some of the track was actual river beach) and the course hadto be changed for the last moto. Clarence Potts treated everyone to the most spectacular crash of the day when he borrowed a 360 Greeves and promptly went on his head.
