Proal again that the most dangerous part of motorcycle racing is the trip borne from the track came last week when a van carrying three California riders back from the Houston Nationals collided with a park car near Abeline, Texas. Injured were Cal Rayborn (broken co.lla.rbone) and Sid carlson (broken feet). Jim Mc turren and another passenger were sbak:en UP. It remains to be seen whether cal's injury will keep him from defending his 200 mile ational title at Daytooa in March. Feb. 7 - With most of Northern California's bot shoes at the Houston Astrodome it was anybodY's race ber.e at the San Francisco Cow Palace, with point leader Chal De Cecco as the most likely to succeed. Since our column is nov being' publi:sl'Ied a week later, most of you probably have already read what bappened to four-time world cbampion Barry Briggs in Houston, Te:xas. One must remember that the machine Barry was rtd:Ing wasn't exactly a speedway macbfue and I also tI'I.iDIt be was UDder a great deal d pressure to do tile best be could smce it was the first time be bad partleipRted in a. really large eftIIt in tIie- United states. However. I dOn't tIIink lUIYODe lias to make ezcoses far Barry. aDd be, least d an, would be ODe to make exeuses_ Having been four-times world cbamplQII be certainlY should DOthave beennenoas at this event. We do IIope be bad ample t1Jne ttt practice on this machine and beeome famiUar witll It. So, it just sbows yon \bat even If you are one of the best in the world, yon: can sWl end. up in last Place. I !loPe this does not discourage Barry or any other European champion from coming to the United States, and 1 !loPe before. there are any derogatory remaries made by members of the press or members of the motorcycling fraterniiT that they will bear in mind that at any time problems can arise to cause the best to look their worst. We bope Barry will have an opportonliT to stay in the United States and participate in some of the coming speedway events this winter. I'm sure the riders will benefit a great deal by participating with Barry. and he should add a great deal of color to the show ~ Pm sore I am not tile originator of. this statement, but it is very peculiar that in our society the females feel they mast have tile last word, as erideDced by a recent column In this paper; aDd for the time being, _ will let It ride as just tbat. This system appears to be a vast improvement over the time-consuming' time frials wllicfl never seemed to be rigbt. anyway. rt looks like this system will carryover to the TT's and bal1-mile events. The first of four beats was won by the veteran San Francisco Road Racer Bill Lyons. His H-D appeared to have it all wrapped uP for the night as he won his semi and had a beautiful start in the main. Chal De Cecco was pressing him into the turns and did take over the first spot for a few laps. The bomb fell in lap six when oil made things virtually impassable. The first to fall was Allen Ke.nyon, 881. The Cupertino Cr .lSher was making his first indoor appearance and doing a wail of a job in third position until be hit the great oil slick. AIter that 11 was like the Keystone Cops on a skid pad. De Cecco, then leading, fell and second place Lyons fe.ll right bebind him. Then Rapid Ralpb Waldeman went by unnoticed. except for the official scorers. Starter Les Morgan didn't give him the checkered until a lap later. This was forgiveable because of the oil track conditions. The only other spectacular haPpening was in Jim Foley'S heat race. When the green new young Allen Ke.nyon bad the lead, an the way from the outside, in the first turn and Foiey obviously dicln'tl1ke this. So in lap three be pressed the brand nev novice and passed' him. Tbis was quite a challenge for the 112 District 36 Champ. The six-lap event was so fast it turned out to be a new lap record r1 57:75 see.. This beats the December record set by Mark Brelsfard cbasing JIllck Theroux. The aetioo will be bot aDd beavy again in seven da,ys as aD the California bot dogs will return from the Astrodome.
