G
Woods, the U.S. Class A Speedway
Champion, also showed the crowd that it
iso't as easy as it looks. He fell off in a
heat race, feet flying, and landed on b1s
rump, skidding Uke a sack of potatoes
across the granite dust. His leathers
didn't save him from the pain of the
scrape, and they were actually getting
ready to take him a way in the ambulance.
However, he stuck with it, eventually
taking the big event of the night.
Young Steve Bass beat Woods in the
trophy dash, in a race that warmed the
hearts of everyone. Now all we need is
a change in the weather, to keep the rest
of us warm.

Bart Markel was a nice guy Sunday at
Potter Lake during the ninth annual Big
Brothers Motorcycle races.
steve Robinson appreciated that.
Markel, Flint's national motorcycling
champion, started in back d the pack in
every race because of b1s S\IPl!rior &bUity and experience.
But Robinson bullt a lead, then played
it cool as the event's biggest crowd d
5,500 spectators looked 00.
"I just turned it on and left it on,"
grinned Robinson, a 27-year-old Grand
Rapids manager of Kawasa1d Midwest.

"It feels just great to come out a winner.
I've been here four times and never had
a win before."
1be race was one of seven solo and
sidecar events SPOI1S01"ed by tile 1MA and
Flint Motorcycle Club whlch annually
contributes tile proceedS to BIg Brothers.
It was a beautiful day for rac1ng and
the turnout surprised many FMC members who were fearful the Super Bowl
game would hurt the crowd.
Markel, who generally jumped into the
third or fourth spot co
into the second straIghtaway, couldn't cope witiiRoblnson's steady hand.
Poor manlpulation 011 the north turn
resulted in lost ground on three straight
round. Markel didn't quite but couldn't
dent the lOO-yard advantage Roblnsoo
had buUt.
Markel f1n1shed second and jumped
right back into tile heavyweight competition whl.ch resulted in a Midland slam.
