'Ibis beeomes even more Imporlallt as the years go by. Sore, some clubs can tbrowa lousy race and make all of us want to kee1bau1 their members, but wltbout' em, duckies, you wouldn't get polots and if you're class C O1lnded tile A M A requires you ride Sportsman 'til you mow1lltatyou're doing• Tb1s year tile Competition Committee voted out tile rule that a club member CllDIIot ride his own eYent, tbls went back to when scrambles used to be tbrown on unknown courses, so now providing the club votes for one of their own to ride and b1s position Is fully covered wb1le be's racing, he may ride. It will be interesting now to see who will rush out a Join a club because the old rule bas veen revoked, most of us know the riders who were so Pnlnt-hungry they wouldn't belong to a club••.some of 'em may get a shock when they find out a club doesn't want tIIem. One club we could literally cry over is the caIlfornta Gophers. For years to be a Gopber was a matter of pride, if yna saw a Gopber you were loo1tlng at !be best, for many ~ the top local riders were Gopbers. But as In anything elese, things went wrong. 'Ibere were internal problems etc. and tbey faded away. We hope - if they want to built lIP agalothey really make It a point to advertise the fact tbat they are looklng for serlousmloded competitors who will work, besides enjoying the fun you have as a club member. '!be name is still tIIere and we feel a lot of the pride is tIIere too among some of the old hands. They've earned the heavy-weight scrambles club trophy for years until relinquishing It this year to the DIrt Diggers. we As the 1968 motorcycle sellittg,;eason drew to an end, Berliner dealers from tile United Smiles tOOk time off to visit Italy and participate In a business and pleasure tour tbat Included stops at the Mota GuZZi factory on the shores of Lake Como and tile Ducatl Meccan1ca plant In tile historic city of Bologna. PartIcipating dealers enjoyed the comfort and convenience of one of tbose giant European luxury motor coaches once they left their Alitalla jet. '!'be luxury buses, It must be pointed out, were complete wltII reclining seats, radio, stereo, and an attractive English-speaking hostess. At the Mota GUZZI plant In Mandello del Lario, a short distance from MIlano tile auto capital of Italy, the dealers' were welcomed and entertained by the U/lCutive staff including Romoio De stefani, Michele Bianeb1, Engloeer Llno Tonti, and many 9tbers. 1be Mota GUZZi museum Intrigued many of tbe American Yisitors as they scrutinized the many rare and unwnal models II1&II1Ifaetured by tbls plant since 1921. Among tile more Interestlog 1lllb1bits were the competition and record- breaking Guzzi models all kept In immaculate condition. A 50llec three-cylinder Guzzi produced about 25 yearsago also caught the eyes of tile many entIIuslastic dealers. Berliner dealers were grouPed to tour the production facllities and witnessed tile operation of the famous GUZZI wIndtunnel In which almost every streamlined record-breaking motorcycle (and many ears) were tested sloce 1949. In tile engine test and dynomometer laboratory the Americans observed various Guzzi engines under test. Amidst the roar of the engines and the maze ~ gauges and dials, dealers tOOk special note of a GUZZi 750ec twin, that was revving at 6,000 rpm, developing over 60 horsepower, and had been under severe test for over 29 hours. LArD I.,s ."0 '.II;S Ten of the V-twin Moto Guzzi V-7 .naebloes baTe been ordered by tile Los Anples Police DepBrtment after an exlleDslft series of tests proved tIIem suitable for police patrol work. za; Motors, tbe Mota Guzzi distributor In Glendale, calif. wID deliYer tbe new lIIIIChloes by the middle ~ AprU, za; SPOIresmmt Bob BIa1r aanouneed. 1be police models wID be blaelt and white 750ee "e r s Ion s, wtBt 63 horsepower.
