Dazzling Girls At Bay Area AMA Banquet George Martin 1be Bay Area Chapter of the American Pederation of Motorcyclists held Its annual awards banquet saturday night at oakland's Holiday Inn. It turns out that the group, known mostly for Its road racing activities, throws a helluva party, too. Example: dance music was a special tape recording assembled by the club, so that couples could gllde across the fioor to soft rhythms wb11e over the music came the scream of a four cyllnder Yamaha recorded on the Isle of Man. Then there were the ladies. Motoreyellsts and beautiful women seem to go together, and the AFM gathering was no exception. Girls who manage to looll: fetcbtng In T-sbtrts and jeans, up to their elbows In grease In hubby's racing pit, were simply dazzling coited and cosseted In their more formal attire. Pete Glordanengo, chapter vice president this year, won the grand prix hJgb po1Jit man trophy. Although she's only 19, Pattie Pres~ tidge, the yo~ lady behind the scenes In District 36, bas a wealth of motorcyllng experience. The daughter of a long time AMA official, Pattie entered the world of cycles with a job as parts girl at age 10. When she reached the ripe oid age of 12, she began scoring AMA professional races In Northern California, a task she continues to perform. This summer, Pattie, along with Cheryl Smith, also 19 and a btgb school friend, will be making the national circuit, writing freelance stories on the races and racers. "I'm really looking forward to the professional motocross that's coming In this year ," says Patti. ~'I'm corresponding with several of the motocross riders In Europe now." Her favorite rider is Dan Haaby. "He's always sort of been my hero," she~s. " 1 saw b1m start his career at three star raceway In sacramento, and watched btm wben he began doing .the nationals." Doug Schwerma of Cycle Service In Hayward, took a few hours off from his frantic preparation of macbtnes for Daytona to attend the banquet. Doug was showing photographs (rather llke a proud father) of the first production models of his Yamaha road racing frame. Like the prototype, which Scbwerma bas been working on for some months, the production frame looks beautiful· llght and extremely sturdy. ".'1 Zll_ AMA Rep Says,Bring Complaints To Him By Bt11 Harmer More than 200 motorcycle racing enthusiasts from San Diego and Imperial Counties gathered at the Sands Hotel In San Diego, Saturday evening February first, to honor the top district riders of 1968 and Introduce the 1969 officers of the San Diego Sports Committee. At 8 p.m., after an hour of socializing, a dellclous roast beef dinner was served "Buffet style". Continuing a 14-year tradition, Stanton Bryan, a San Diego accessory dealer acted as Master of ceremonies. He Introduced the 1969 officers, starting with President, NUes Ussery and continuing with Vice President, Bob GoodIng and bts wife, carl; Acting Secretary Treasurer, Dennis GU!ban and wife Sbaron. The elected Secretary Treasurer, John Hardy could not be present and Point Committee Cbatrman, H.L. (Artie) Gunn and his wife Donna were also absent. DIstrict 38 AMA CompetlUon Committee Representative, George Admire, told d bts elQl8!'lences at the recent national coneaft In Obto and suggested that any desired rule c han g e s or complaints should be brought to btm and he would represent the district at the National committee meettnis. . With the exception of the Powder Puff class, tropbtes were awarded to the first ten top finishers In the Desert scrambles as well as the TT scramblers In lOOCc Expert, 2SOCc Expert and Open Expert classes. The ladies received awards for first place finishers only. National champion road racer, CalYin Rayborn was Introduced and said a few words; former Daytona winner Floyd Emde took a bow from the fioor. Other San D1egans who won glory at DaYtona, Brad Andres and Joe Leonard, were not present but got a big band from the crowd anybow.1n conclusion, Mr. Bryan stated that San Diego can boast more home town boys who have been In the winner's circle at Daytona, thaD any other city In the country. He called attention to young Don Emde who will be making his second trip to Daytona this year. Mickey and Carol Cbtara were spotllghted for special mention as the top motorcycllng family of the district. Mickey finished 2nd In the lOOcc expert TT Scrambles and Carol was the top finisher In the Powder Puff TT scrambles. With dinner finished, a local Rock band took over and made so much noise that most of the enthusIasts left, but a rew of the kids took off their shoes and danced.
