Beauty And Brawn At Dana Point Trials IN LANCASTER IT'S Story and Photos by Gary Barton Don & Ray's Motorcycle Shop 1223 W.Ave. I, Lancaster, Calif. DANA POINT, Cal., Jan. 12- Mike Hans took the amateur trials run here over riders 'with many years more experience. Bob Nickelsen and Tom Stowers made the fewest mistakes in Master and Expert; respectively . The day began in a cold, blustery way and gave little hint to the upcoming heated competition. Approximately 90 riders appeared ready to try their best in the first trails staged this year. Seven amateur sections and seven master sections were placed around the four mile course. Riders were required to make three laps through the ple~nt country. Bob Grove, Jack Ward,..Dave Evans and Bob Nickelsen were chiefly responsible for the design of the traps. 11' s a lot of work to set UP 14 traps but can be a lot of fun. Much planning is required and many changes are made before the section is finished. Perhaps the course planners scared themselves with the Master/Expert traps because the Amateur appeared to be too easy for most riders. Several zero scores were recorded' and a ride-off was required to break the tie. Four riders in the amateur lightweight class were involved in the ride-off. These four were required to ride a trap designed to be a tie breaker. Youthful Mike Hans showed that he has the ability to become a top-flight Trials eXPert as he dropped but two points in the three passes through the speClal trap. In so doing Mike bested Bill Smith (5 points), Vince Martinelli (6) and Mike's father Bob Hans (9). Two other zero scores were recorded and both were good enough for first place positions. Den n i s Christiansen dropped the minimum amount in the Amateur Ultra-lightweights and Dee Dee Earl was tops in the amateur worn ens, by keeping her feet on the pegs when it counts the most. In the Master class Bob Nickelsen made it known that he'S out to get that No. 1 plate next year as he rode his Bultaco to the No. 1 position. Bob'S 14 points was a clear margin over John Walters 19 points. Bob Grove, fresh from his wheelie victory at Ascot Park, coasted to a third place finish. Among the experts, Tom Stowers made his last ride as an expert a winning one. Tom lost 44 points, placed first and earned the required 10 points to transfer to the master class. Ed Davenport made the switch from 90cc Hodaka to 250cC BultacO; the change must have suited him well for he finished second. (ResUlts on page 16) (805) 942-9624 ._---.... Hodaka mounted Gale Searlne competed with the boys and lost 25 points. Bob Grove motored to third Master.
