Guess Who Won The San Gabe Scrambles story and Photo by Dick Wright CALIFORNIA CITY, Cal., Jan. 19 - The setting was perfect for some fast and well-organized desert racing, havlng ralned all Saturday night but stopping just before dawn on Sunday, leavlng the sand damP, but not muddy. The area picked by the promoting club was ideal, resembling a Moto Cross-type course with rolling bUlstdes and fast, flat areas. J.N. Roberts took advantage of all these conditions to rack up a double win,lak1ng the 250 race in the morning and the Combined Open and 500 event In the aIternoon, again assuming the status of Top Man In the Desert. There were ,two courses; the Novices racing on a fast, open course, and the experts battling it out in the rough, billy areas spiced with some wild hoop-deedoos and a fast trail througb the pits. The first race on the Expert course was the Amateur-Expert Trail B1kes, sending sixty rider s oU at the drop of the banner for the wide left-turn one hundred yards out. They went througb this area ten abreast, with Jack Morgan,II1, grabblng the lead. He bad to figbtfor his position by bolding oU a strong challenge from Mark Rader, 11608, and was eventually passed by the young rider. Morgan regained his lead in the hilly section and went on to take the win, with Amateur Rader coming in second and the hardcharging Terry Clark, #395, in third,All three riders were seated firmly on Hodakas. The new racing team of Dean Goldsmith, 1139, and Wes Anderson Jr., 114, both on Harley Davidsons, placed fourth and fifth respectively. The 250's were off next, and Gary Conrad, 1121x, out for the first time in three months, grabbed the lead, with Roberts rigbt on his tail. They dueled wheel-to-wheel, putting on a real show, with Roberts tinally overcomlng Conrad in the third lap and holding itfor the win. The out-of-condition Conrad took a welldeserved second, and Tom Muto, il71x L was third. Tbese three riders were all Husky-mounted. Everyone was looking forward to the Comblned 500 and OpenAmateur-Expert go, as there was absolutely no dUst, and the riders would be able to turn it on with plenty of room to spare. 'Ibe lead • at the first turn' went to Lynn Cole, #244c, astride a Malco, but Roberts passed b1m a mile out and built UP a strong lead. Roberts showed beautlful style as be took the jumps at the back of the course, doing wheelles lnto the balf-mUe-1yoe turn througb the pits at top speed for a wide- margin win. George Walker,II225m, rode well and placed second, followed by James Martino, 115. All. were again on Husk1es. Seventeen-year-old Jim Wilson was f1ftIl man In, taldng First Amateur on a Greeves. He bad been running better, but was slowed. down when he stopped for a quick drlnk of water. Dusty Coppage, 1160, came from a bad start to tate First ()pen Class on his well-prepared Triumph.
