COOLEY'S COLUMN A WINNING TEAMI By Wes Cooley Plans are now being formulated for the 1969 Inter-Am Moto-Cross Series to be beld in the United States and Canada. So far, the s( bedule consists of twelve events. In several of the events, tbe international riders will be split and balf of them will participate in one event and the other balf in another on the same date in various parts of the country. This is being done to belp some of the smaller promoters who are unable to draw as large spectator crowds and therefore will not bave to payout such a large guarantee but will still be able to give people in the United States a cbance to see true international moto-cross racing. We think this is a very good idea, especially in the less populated areas where the promoter does not bave the potential to afford an expensive guaranteed event. We bave been told tbat this year there will be an added incentive for the top U.S. citizen rider. This "citizen" designation will eliminate European riders who bave come to America to live and are participating in international events with either a U.S. or foreign license. There is the possibility tba! the top U.S. rider will bave the opportunity to go to Europe, expenses paid, to participate in some European mota-cross events. As this is confirmed and we receive more information, it will appear in this column. Most of the promoters and riders who participated in last year's Inter-Am series were very enthusiastic. I tbinldor the first time a greater amount of people in the United States were able to see true moto-cross racing than in the past and it sbould do a great deal to increase the popularity not only of moto-cross racing but of other forms of motorcycle competition events. We are confident tbat if speedway racing receives as good reception as motocross bas, this too will do a great deal to promote motorcycling, especially in the international aspect. We understand this year there will be a new promoter at Whiteman Stadium, and the person doing the promotion is an ex-speedway r ace r and understands many of the problems facing the rider and spectator. We look forward to an excellent program, not only entertaining to the spectators but also more equitable to the riders participating in the events which sbould make for better racing in general. Dear Ernie - I appreciated reading your open letter concerning my column. You did not offend me but pointed out a very definite oversight in my terminology which was probably in poor taste. I'certainly was not referring to truly mentallY retarded people, but rather to the implication given by certain groups of people in our society such as the Hells Angels, even though we are certainly aware they are not actually mentallY retarded. The phrase was probably too loosely used, and I do thank you for calling my attention to it. I personally am very much aware of the problems faced by this particular group of people, since my wife has donated a great deal of her personal time and efforts toward helping the mentally retarded in Orange County, California. Clymer To Sell Minarelli Engines On his recent visit to Germany and ItalY, Floyd Clymer signed an agreement with two prominent Italian manufacturers to represent their lines in the United States and Canada. One is a complete line of Minarelll engines, which will be marketed in the United States under the name of ClymerMinarelll.
