Ore•• Jan. 12 - WIlen the Lobo Motorcycle Club hosllld the Hare Scrambles at Colton. it proved to be one ot the toqgbest days at the season for such a run. Forty-two fearless riders put their money on the line to ride five laps of a four mile course over ball-frozen ground, snow, water and lots of mud to see who were the really stout ones. About 15 prospective riders showed tel. took one look at the course, snowy weather, water and mud and said toheck with it. This was no candy run and they wanted no part of it. From a dead start the riders squirted ott and funneled into a narrow lett hand turn creek crossing. For those who were eager and cut the corner of the turn. the creek was almost bottomless. After a slight separation of men from boys here. they came to a 100 yard field, one of the few good places for passing. This led to the base of a hill with several deep ruts. Woe to the guys who ride with two wheels on the ground, and bad low ground clearance or wide engine cases. They just about had to ride on the rear wheel like Torsten Hallman to get thru this kind of stutt. After the first lap, Portland's mote- cross ace. Dick Jagow, watered out his borrowed 360 Montesa as did hill climb champion. Richard Clay,. on his 250 Harley-Davidson. As the event wore on the water problem managed to put about ba1f the bikes out at commission. About 25% ot the other riders didn't finish because ot other reasons or they were just plain tired of trying to maintain such a gruelling pace thru such rugged country. All through the race there was a contest for first place between Dale Walker and Clarence Paughts (pronounced Potts). Each time Clarence would come around to check point #1 he would ask "how far am 1 from first place?", and the checker would tell him "only 30 seconds". With determination and an air of nonchalance, Clarence would ease his Greeves into motion and try to catch the leader. F1nal1y his determination (or lady luck) paid ott. because Dale Walker had a breakdown wi thin a mile and a half of the finish line. Clarence Paughts (pronounced Potts) was now an easy winner, while Gib Wright on his 250 Yamaha, snatched second place only minutes behind the winner. Only 20% of the starters finished. Less than half the bikes at the end of the event were running well enough to run another lap. Recapping The Bushmasters By Erich Kobler INDIO, Cal., Jan. 19 - Yucca Valley HAHI Fiasco; Fake; Fraud. not necessarily 10 that order I Now that I've got that ott my chest. I'll settle down to mere ranting and raving. To start 6ft with, the course wasn't even close to the Yucca Valley turnoff at Dillon Rd. It was almost stralghtnorth ot Indio. It seems that the Bushmasters knew they'd get a poor turn-out if they "told it where it is", so they laid Ume for maybe 20 miles from a place that bad a nicer sound to it. Hence the words fraud and take. As for the fiasco part ot it, that started at the start. 10 drift sand. After that the sand gradually gave way to rocks. It finally became not only rocky, but rocks on rocks. Sharp polnty ones. The round ones were heavily, but impartially distributed througbout the sand washes. Actually, the aforementioned problems would have been barely tolerable were it not for the next. main deterrent, (or detrourant). The course. wblch was supposed to be 30 miles but was ctoser to 52 miles, was terribly marked, causing so many guys to get lost, so many times. 10 several ditterent places. that the otncla1s were discussing throwing out all the cbeck points. I'm not at all sure the race will count towards yearly points. Not only was the lime insuftic1ent, but DO one ment100ed the need to Ignore the orangf" ribbon. lett ""er from a previous run. In fact one of the card markers was telling riders to follow both the lime and the ribbon. This ribbon and the lime ran ""er the same ground for something like halt the distance, here now, gone over the neJd rise. 10 many cases, such as where there was no Ume to be seen, the ribbon led the riders a merry chase indeed. I will say however, that the really dangerous spots were well marked. The course was laid out 10 such country as to probably disqualifY the race anyway, because the rulebook states tbattor this type of race the course should be over "natural terrain"; but this course went through graded portions where the whole side of a hill was crumbly shale and sharll rock. ~his, more than once! Several riders packed up at the end of the first loop. This was capPed by the fact that the people at the finish line seemingly didn't know when to finish the race. The pligbt of Jack Morgan was such that his neck will probably get red for a long time at the mere mention of" Bushmasters". At the end of his second loop be was told to keep going, only to breal< down. He tinally lett with his bike the following day. The rest of the trail bikes went two loops. Some of the smart ones like Dean Goldsmith elected not to go. lt the Bushmasters are allowed to put on another polnt run, I hope they will haye learned enougb by this one to concentrate more on good marldng and less 10 distance.
