Trallblke : : For those of you interested In drag racing, but who have never taken that first step to get to the local strip because you think there are too many hassles (or, In other words, you just don't know what to do) let me explain what you will go through to get to the staging area. Let's say you have a stock factory machine. U so, you shouldn't have any sweat passing inspection. But a good thing to do before leaving home Is to check your bike over yourself. (You can do this with a wrench). Make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight. U something falls off during a run it can not only be embarrassing, but It can also be a danger to yourself or someone else. While still at home, make sure you have a heavy jacket, crash helmet, goggles or face shield and gloves. As for footwear, you must have boots Qrlaceup Shoes. Tennis shoes are O.K. Now that you have all these things on, you can jump on your machine and head for the local drag strip. At some strips you can get your entry card at the entrance. U not, ask the man selling tickets and he will send you in the right direction. When you purchase your $1 entry form, you will also have to buy a $1 pit pass. The pit pass is also your insurance. U at any time you get hurt, on or off your machine, the strip will see to it that you get the proper attention. They will even give you a free ride In the ambulance If you need it. Now that you have your entry card filled out and your pit pass on, you can startlooklng for the motorcycle Pit Director. Any of the strip personnel or the Special Pollce Officers can tell you how to accomplish that. Once you've found the Director, he will take your entry card and make an inspection of your machine. Mter this Is done, he will issue you a number, and will put your bike in a class along with other b1kes of the same. or near the same d1splacement. U you have any questions to ask, this is the time to do so. You will be allowed several practice runs and that will give you a little time to get used to things. The first run Is the hardest. You will feel a little nervous and tense.as you ride Into the staging area. After you've staged, this condition will get a little worse, but not for long. The green lIgbt will come on and you will be busy rldlng down the strlP. Mter a few runs, that nervousness sort of leaves and you get used to things. You don't seem to notice all those eyes staring at you anymore and you're all ready for the eliminations. The d1rector will match you up with another rider. From bere on, I don't think I have to say much. Just - Good Luck! And remember, win or lose, it's one hell of a lot of fun. For those of you who want to run in the Modified or Gas class, your best bet would be to lake a trip to the drag strip befo~ehand and get some Ideas and information. I don't think I have to say much for the Fuel burners. Most of them have worked their way up through the d1v1sions. Remember, you female riders are always welcome, and the Pit Directors usually go WAY out of their way to help you gals~ One last thing. The age l1m1t at most strips Is 16, and you must have a valid driver'S license. Check with your local drag strip for the ruling on the age Umlt, as this tends to vary from strip to strip. Steve Row'es Dies 1 received word today that Steve Rowles was k1lled in action on Jan. 17 in Vietnam. Steve, as most of you know, was the young man who set many records in 1967 on his Suzuki X6 Street B1ke. In the following year, he bullt a 250 Gas machine and set many more records. When he went Into the Army about a y~ ago, his brother Vince took over his machine. S t eve will be greatly missed. I haven't received word yet from AHRA on why the gates of the Wlnternationals were closed on motorcycles, but I have received word I11d1rectly, from Beeline Dragway. Matt Glover, a resident of Tempe, Arizona, and a writer for Cycle News, wrote In with this information: Jan. 16, he phoned Jim Rogers at his home (Jim manages Beeline Dragway) and asked him If he would verify the fact the bikes were not running. He said "Yes, that Is true". When asked If there was any particular Scene reason, Jim replied, without any hesitation, that they have trouble with them. They fight amongst themselves, and most Important, the motorcycle manufacturers do not support the event. Matt went on to say that local bikes run at Beeline Dragway regularly, and therefore, there Is apparently no clashofpersonaIltieson the 'loca1 scene. Well, now you have It. I will still publish the answer I get from AHRA; and when everybody gets It out of their systems, I hope we can put our heads together and work something out so the gates will always be open to the bikes.
