ODe hundred and fifteen riders lined
up 011 tile startIDg Une of what was to be
a fast and enjoyable course. The banner
_
droPPed for tile dead engine start
and most ot the competitors roared off
across lfle boonles to pick up tile fir st
dirt road. First to arrive at the first
cbeck point was Red Cadwell on a BSA
Victor. He was pursued by B11l o a _
011 a 360 MQlltesa, Glen Clinton on a 360
Malco and 360 Husky mounted Martin

About half a mUe before the first cheek
tile course followed a road thatparalle1ed
a sand wasb. The riders could see those
abead of them returning throurh this
sand wash. The temptation to cut off
almost a mile of the course proved too
mucb for 14 riders who also simultaneously cut off their chances of taking
bome any of the brass. Some of the were
so deligbted by the pin they bad made
that lfley cut this check several more
times. ThIs proved a bitpuzzling to some
of the riders who went throngb the cbeck
as they passed the same shortcutters
lap after lap.
By lfle second cbeck Clinton bad iakeo
the lead, followed by Dawson, Carter
Robins on a 650 Trl., 360 Husky pUot
