By Daniel MacMurray UPPER LAKE , cai., Nov. 10- Yes, 1148 is a lot of motorcycles. But that's how many showed up tor the 22nd Cowbell Enduro. They started them oft at six a minute. There were only about 200 real endur o r iders. There were riders ther with centerstands, kickstands, headl ights, taillights and license plates. Many dldn' t bave proper riding clothes or tool . We took one rider home In the back of our truck because he didn't have a tlrepump , But, on the other hand, I sa~ one honest-to-goodness enduro rider alo ngsi de the road building a fire beside his bike . I thought he was going to burn his bike up and asked him what he was doing? He said: "A call wir e busted and I bave to solder it back". And he wasn't there when I r etur ned. • Bill Onga, an •A' r ider, took the overall win on a 250 Husky. Some old guys there were the best rough riders around, and they probably tlnished . The younger riders didn't like the course because It wasn'Uastenough. In tact, not many young riders came. It was a good enduro track. The bark was on the tallen trees and the ground wasn't tull of holes . But that was before the race. The first twenty or thirty miles at It were zigity-zag1ty torest roads . There were also roads made with a chain saw and parts where there weren't roads at all. I asked one street r ider how he was ·going to get up the next hill? " I' m not worried about gettlng up," ... " Ah, the (u&ll!) j ays of enduro ri ding an the l ovely (nut s!) forest bed. he said."I'm worried about getting down.' He made It up after nine or ten trtes. The riders had to go down this gigantic hill, cross a creek and then power up another hill. This is where most at them touled up• . The experienced enduro riders s igned up first. Alter them carne the .. not so good" riders. Every Ume a couple at these got stuck going up this hill It made the ground a little bit softer. Finally, It got so bad that three men were behind the lOOcc bikes. One girl made It bal!way UP, looked bac k and Just stopped right there. Atter you pushed your blke up that hill (If you did) you were pretty tired. Why one rtder went ott into the bushes and took himself a little nap. Another rider saw him and threw himself down beside him. There were some riders who seemed to do everything the opposite of what they should. The riders who signed uP last probably finished after six 0' clock. l! you went around picking up on that track after you could bave made yoursel! a bike. (Results on page 26) • .. " ;..,. sa It stopped dead ri ght there and j ust wouldn' t start f or the world. We ll , I gave It such a ki ck... • RIGHT: Tha t s enau&ll of that.
