POET'S CORNER TRAIL BIKE RIDERS By Mary Jane Van Fleet I'm not sayin' any of' em look like a bum but look at the rags, filth and the scum rags and tatters, fio tsam and jetsam grimy dirty, gamey and then some but happy as larks with a trail to follow come back thit sty and ieelin' all hollow follo w the l eader up the hill helpin' each other when they take a spill breath in' air clear as crystal bike underneath you hot as a pistol I it' s single file with that nutty parade switchback tail, lower gear downgrade peelin ' rubber, bumin' oil fightin' rocks is plenty of toil loosened bolts they don't condone, or, that fork in the road may be your own over the handl ebars; that poor old fellow bumps and bruises don't make us mellow sand in the teeth, you're eatin' dust up that rocky mess before you bust give' er the gas, open up the throttle your tired old bones you won't coddle sit up straight so you won't look so tired only grimy dirty and all perspired go into a slide, then over a clitt pick up your bones all achin' and stil! dab some mud in the cuts to stop all the bleedin' a trail ridin' doctor is what thi s bunch is needin ' sli p and slide in the dirt, clear to the top o ver i t now, L ord, i t' s all one bi ll rock ( watch out bears, here they come re turn to camp wi th the settin' sun an i cy beer to sl ake yo ur thirst then munch some bread and li verwurst then l oad up the bike s and head for home see you next trip , it' s the end of the poem FRI ENDSOF THE ROAD B y Ray Horn i ck Toge Uter i n Ute open, WiUt folks who love to feel The almost human energy of the s wilt revohing wh eel, Just to feel the pulse of n ature I And relax from the galling load Of th e care s and strains of workdays Among comrades of the road.
