The · lOOCc machines were a way at lO:OOa.in . Bob McLaughlin, riding . lOOCc Sachs, took an early lead followed by Larr y Cook (Yamaha) and Bob Belt ona Steen's Hodaka. Before the first lap · was co mpleted Belt had taken second from Cook. Cook, in turn , pass ed Be lt on the second lap, only to ha ve Belt come back in the thlrd and really turn it on, pulllng away from Cook an d rapidly gaining on McLaughlin. By the tltth lap Belt had passed Mc Laughlin' s Sachs and was steadily pulling ahead when the Hodaka quit in the seventh lap, letting McLaughlin take the win by a large margin over Cook and thlrd-place finisher John Pavich (Bul.) , The s econd 100c c moto saw young Bill Dean grab an early lead on hi s Lobito followed by Mike Garrett , Denny Groover by Don Smith, F letcher. and Earl Roeseier, who was r lding a 125 Sachs . On the third lap Rlley got over enthusiastic coming out o! the ditch and unloaded right in fr ont o! everyone . Then Rlley' s troubles started as hi s pl ug began bridging. F ry began to gain on him. Roesel er had now moved hi s li tile Sachs in to fourth place but got a fiat in the tltth lap and retired to re- tire. Back at the end o! the thlrd lap Tom Rapp had taken second away fr om Fry and s oon they both pa s s ed . Rlley' s Greeves. Rapp moved out ahead and took the win followed by· F ry, Smith and Rlley. 0 In Mid· Air In the second 250 moto Warren Burdine held the l ead until the first Jump when Rlley passed him 10 mid-air . Then he completely ran away from the competition until halt-way through the third lap when he got a fiat back tire and dr opped out for the day. Larry Cook worked his way IlP from eighth place into the num be r two spot on the s econd lap . But by now McL aughlin had what proved to be an losur mountabl e lead and Cook gained only sUghtly on him . The first five positions remained the same until the fifth lap when John Pavtch, who had started out 10 twentieth place , finally worked his way Into fifth . Two laps later McLaughlin took the win. Cook took the lea d In the thlrd moto foll owed by McLaughlin, Garrett , Groover and Pavich. McLaughlin passed Cook after the first hill but fell on the fir ebreak and \W.S passed by the four behind him . Cook now had the ·lead and let out the stops, opening up bi g . McLaughlin was gaining one position per lap but the s lower rider s hel d him back en ough so that when he f1nal1y did get Into s econd place on the fif th lap he \W.S too fax behind Cook to catch up , Th e biggest race of the day \W.S the l75cc/ 25OCc co mbin ed with 43 entries . Bob Rlley took the le ad at the start followed by Bill F l etcher , Warren Burdine , Hal Birk, an d Ron Fry. By the second lap Rlley had a huge lead ove r Fry, who had wor ked hi s ....-ay IlPto second. followed lead foll OW ed by Fry, Fle tch er, Ph11 Mailloux and Smith. Don Grieve came all the way fr om 18th place to take thlrd on the fourth lap but \W.S passed on the next lap by Tom Rapp who had started back in 21s t place . Kopp finis hed fi rst followed by F ry, Rapp , Gr ieve and Smith. In the thlrd moto F r y grabbed the lead followed by Grieve . Fletcher, Smith and Le o Dobbs . On the second lap Smi th, Dobbs an d Gary Whitehead all pa s sed Fletch er . Th e third lap s a w a very determined Gr i eve take the lead and move well ahead. Tom Rapp had now moved his Husky up to third place and had hi s Sights s et on Ron Fry. Rapp grabbed second fr om Fry on the tltth lap and too k over the lead when Grieve dropped out In the sixth laP. Rapp took the win af te r eight laps foll owed by F ry and Smi th. The closest call of the day happened to Roe seler who had been running fif th for halt the r ace an d went into the rough in an attempt to pass fourth place Gary White head. He hi t a good bum p an d did a perfect han dstand with his feet straight over Ii1s head, passed Whitehead, landed back on hi s s eat, s ide saddl e , an d cr ossed the finish Une 10 four th place.
