Next Week- BIG HOLIDAY ISSUE-on sale 3 weeks NEW LICENSES FOR MOTORCYCLE DRIVERS The add1tional li cense tests required for motorcycle r iders are now being given by !be Department of Motor Vehicles. Any motorcycle r ider renewing his automobile driver's license will need to qualify for the add1tional motor cycle license. Motorcycle endorsements need not be added unti l present auto driver s' licenses expire, The law called for !be requirement to begin on Jan. I, 1969. However !be DMV has been giving !be tests since November 13. The riding test involves rid1ng in a stra.1ght line at low speeds, makin g a figure eight, riding on !be street and returning to !be area. There is also a wr itten test. It presently consists of ten questions on such matters as which brake to apply fi r s t, where in !be Iana to r ide in wet wea!ber, how to cross railroad tracks, whe!ber to lean in a turn, how to control high speed wobble , applying front brakes In a turn, whe!ber to use your feet when turning, how to carry packages, relative stopping d1stanc es for cars and motorcycles and whe!ber to allow add1t1onal distance when foll owing an a utomoblle. Persons wanting to r ide only a motor cycle need not ge t an a utom obile li cense first. Per mits will be granted for motorcycles for 17-1 /2 years or age and over or for 15- l/2- year-olds who have driver tra.1n1ng. This allows riding during daylight hours, off !be freeway. It Is not necessary to be acc ompanied by ano!ber rider . The permit, li ke !be au tomoblle permit, is good for six monlbs and is . issued upon satisfactory co mpletion of !be written te st . There Is mixed feeling as to !be effect !be new licenses will have. Some feel It will eliminate !be marginal rider, !be one who hops on a tra.1lblke to ride to !be grocery sometimes. They may feel It isn' t wor!b !be bo!ber to get a license. others feel It will appreciably improve !be accident rate for motorcycle riders in !be state. To say !be least, in !be present " safety climate", license requirements were !be least we could swap for mandatory helmets . It will be interesting to study !be figures for !be next several years and see if licenses improve !be overall picture . Adelan'o Traci Wins Permanen' Perini' ADELANTO, canr., Dec . 2, 19683 p.m, - Irma and Glenn Redd1ng, owners or !be ....delanto motor cycle scrambles track and pla yground In this desert community were granted a permanent permit to operate !be track after satisfying author1ti es that !be motorcycle races posed no problems to !be city. The. permit Is contingent on the Reddings bulld1ng permanent snack bar and restroom facilities on !be grounds wllb1n 120 days . After spending one year on probation, !be track won !be comp lete support or police, planning, building and heal!b departments, who testified that there had been no problems and no complaints about the track operation dur ing that year. Son Also Races The Health Department did insist that permanent fl ush toilets and running water for sanitary purposes must be installed wl lb1n 120 days , howeve r . Mrs. Redding , a motorcycl e en!buslast whose s on also races, says she and her husband have spen t $8,000 on track de. vel opment In !be past year, and that !be r eq uired sanitary facilities will cos t another $8,000 . She pointed out that !be track, which hosted only four District 37 point runs In the past year, would need to have a point run every mon!b ne xt year to break even . She plans to ask !be Distric t 37 Sports Committee a t their meetlng thi s week to consider sc heduling 12poin t runs a t !be Adelanto track.
