Cal., Nov . 24 - The Perris Vall ey M.C. tri ed another type of mass start today - two races going on at the same time . Everybody used the long course, races were either three or four' laps and we all got (or most of us did) three chances . Sound Imposslble7 I t worked and worked well. Riders lined up and as each wave took off. safely rounded the first turn and started up the hill, the next gr oup was flagged off behind them. The spookiest was the 250 Novice when ther e were three groups of riders In different sections of the track at one time. In the big bores, such as the 500 and Open classes, the Amateurs took off first and the Experts after them.Groupsofcheckers took care of the scoring for just their own little wave of riders. There was one time when It didn't work. A group of l00cc novices that had taken off ahead of the Powder Puff class was lined up waiting to cross the track into the pits after their race. One young Startl nc the l00cc ElqIert cl ash, Gary Scot t' s Hodaka stands up on rl cht next door to Fred Edwards. man refused to Wait and pulled out right across the track as Marsha Mcintosh came around the rock turn. Splatl Luckily, she only got bumps and bruises but the crash totally destroyed the front end of her beautiful little Yamahaand he really got his l umps . It·s a good thing It wasn' t a 40-lncher that nailed him . The last race was run on whole cour se, lights being turned on I n the last laps . Wi thout using this system and with the early darkness . Perris Valley wouldn't have stood a chance of getting everybody In . DId It mess up the scoring? Nope. The results were ready by 8: 30 that night! The Racin g Bit Some of the starts were wild as the guys got too much traction and slewed sldeways •••the Open Novices had two restarts as they just couldn't get around that first turn with everyone still aboard their bikes•••the Powder Puffs put on a good show with track rivals Eulene Long and Sandra Termln of the Desert Daisys • l l .....
