Bikes Beat Cars Again in Baj a By Wayne Flemington & Pedro Porto Photos by Larry WUlltt LA PAZ, Mexi co, Nov. 5 & 6 - Anyway you look at it, motorcycles beat the cars and dune buggies to La Paz this year. First overall of the 243 starters was the desert-trained team of 34-year-old Larry Bergquist and Gary Preston, 32, on a 325cc Honda . Second overall on a 650cc Triumph was the Al Rogers, Don Hohannan team . both 35. Rogers and Bohannon were close to the leader all the way . However, 60 miles trom La Paz engine trouble forced them to llmp In on one cylmder , Of the top ten !Inlshers, six were motorcycle te ams. Sixth was the team of Bob Ewing, 41, and Mike Konle, 23, on BSA. Seventh were James Martino, 32, and Steve Holliday, 19, on Husqvarna, A Harley !Inished ninth, r idden by Max Switzer, 32, a d Paul Hunt, 34. Tenth were Gail Ferrell and Jack Froellch, both 33, on a Honda. Two of the se cycles, the Husqvarna and the tenth-place Honda were In the 250cc-and-under class . About 224 ears and dune buggies s tarted , and about 18 moto rcycles . The 1967 Ensenada to La Paz record of 26 hours, eight min utes held by Vic WIlson and Ted Mangels In a Meyers Manx was broken 13 times thi s year. The new record of Bergquist/Preston Is 20 hours, 38 min utes . Bill Bell of Long Beach Honda, tuner of both the above- mentioned Honda teams !lew over Bergquist and Preston' s heads during the whole r ace.
