Mainer Richards
The youth of today will be the race
stars of tomorrow, and Mainer Richards,
17, of Orov1lle, located in Butte County,
began his motorcycling early In hopes of
someday becoming skilled enough to
make his clalm to fame.
The son of Mr . and Mrs . Jay E.
Richards of 6685 irwin Ave., Orovllle,
Richards is a junior at Orovllle High
School. He ran his first race in March
of 1966 when he was just 15-years-old.
He turned amateur In August, 1967, and
st111 retains that classification.
Althougb he is a two-stroke man,
Richards rode his fi r s t s eason on a
Honda 50cc . Last year be had his own
Yamaha lOOcc twin, an d this year he will
r ide for Drake' s Hodaka Shop on a new
100cc ma chine.
Richards , whos e numbe r Is 122R, flattracks every wee k at the Cycl e- land
Speedway between Orovllle and Chico .
However, his real specialty is scram bling.
Back- to- back with his 14 r acing trophi es, eight of them first pla ce cups,
Ric hards displays a number of awards
won for raising purebred Berkshire hogs .
Richards is an officer in Orov1lle
High's F u t u r e Farmers of America
Chapter and an A student In agricultural
science.
As enthusiastic abo ut raising hogs as
racing, Richards recently sold one of his.

Lives toc k an d Horse Show In the Cow
Palace in San Francisco, where he took
a second place r ibbon. He also was notifie d he was the winner of a cash award
for s howmanship.
Beside other awards in his major,
Richards received his second silver
award this year from the Bank of Amer tea for his agricultural project.
Richard' s short race career has tak en
him as far nor th as McArthur in Shasta
County and s outh , to Tracy, which is
located near Stockton. He has contested
at every track In between, Incl uding well
known Ros evill e and at a track in a town
with the unusual name of Hungry Hollow .
Born Sept. 27, 2950, in Honolulu,
Hawaii, Richards moved to Oro vllle with
his family in September of 1960, following r e tir e me nt of his father from the
U.S. Navy.
His parents and his sisters, Regina and
Dorothy , are en thusiastic race fans and
travel with Richards to all of his races.
The y all attend many races in which
RichardS is not a parti cipa nt. The entire
Ric hards family wor ks s lde- by-sidewlth
other race enthusiasts to conti nually upgr ade the quallty and image of motor cycling and strive to pr omote the sport•.
An active member of the Butte County
Search and Re sc ue Team , Richards
proudly states , " The only thing in the
wor ld that can make me miss a race is
a " cali out" by Search an d Res cue."
Foll owing his graduati on fr om high
