SANTA CRUZ, ca., Nov. 10- Today the
RIdge Runner's M.C. threw their "first
ever" mote-cross race. The event, held
In the DeLavega Park area of Santa Cruz,
drew about 200 riders and 800 spectators.
The club had anticipated a larger turnout
but there was a loss of some 1200 riders
to the 22nd annual Cowbell Enduro.
The event was an exciting prelude to
the upcoming big one on November 2324th the weekend when RRMC hosts the
Inte;natlonal Mote-cross at the park.
Mike David riding a Van Tech Suzuki
made a shambles of the 100cc novice
class by winning all three motos . In each,
Mike moved up fr om 5th or 6th to take
over the lead and win. Mike did a fine Job
of pass ing the s upposedly faster amateurs and experts. Jack Jens en (Moto
Beta) took the 100 expert race.
The 250 novice class was, as expected,
dominated by the local club members .
Bob Bowers took home the big win by
scoring two firs ts and a fourth. Don
Avery, a club member, was a close overall se cond with Geor ge Humphreys
(Husky) fini shing third. Avery and Humphreys both turned In tine r ides In their
attempt to win, but Bowers pr oves his
strength In the rough.
Steve Muscatte ll decisivelY won the
250 Amateur and Expert race, laking 2
wins out of the three motes, Steve lost
out In the last moto to Mike Akatlff
(Yam). Jon Card pulled ott the second
place ove r all win with Akatltf taking
third .
250 Amateur rider, Don Ivan gave the
experts a ride for their money by placing
a close fourth overall and first amateur
In the first mote , In the second, Ivan was
once again winning the amateur divi sion
and was rtmnIng third overall whenforced
out with mechanical d1tt1cultles . Dave
Worth won the amateur class, Dave
Calowell second and Don Ivan third overall.
The Ope n novice event final was won
by Ji m Robb aboard a Cheney Victor. Al
Garrahan foll owed with a close second.
The Open amateur and expert race was
the climax of the day as the best of the

TUCSON, Ar iZ., Nov. 10 -It v..as the firs t
race of the season here after a long hot
summer. A good turn-out of both riders
(Greeves) ro ut e d his oppos ition, by
storming to two victor ies , easUy won,
In all three motes,
The OPen expert race was a big victory for Montesa and (the Viva Kid) Bob
Grossi. Bob, a cl ub membe r, r ides a
Montesa tuned by John Preston and is
sponsor ed by Moor e & Sons Montesa of
Santa Cr uz. Grossi reallY did his thing
by winning all thr ee of the expert motes,
After crashing Into a downed r ider,
Jim Stein, Gr oss i worked his way up
!rom t1fth to the lead and won the first
mote . The s econd motos found Bob grabbing the lead on the first lap. He went
on to win the second and third race by an
Incredible di stance (He was outof slght) .
Bob Hagar (CZ) took second overall with
Jim Stein just four points behind In third.
(Results on page 16)
and spectators got things of to a flying
start.
Several r iders from the San Diego
area showed - Dick Mills , J.R. Bishop
and Ward Ring. These guys get a chance
to ride every week and they looked It,
compared to some of the Arizona r iders.
The exceptions were Byron Boaz, Jim
Halfor d and Bryan Ross from Phoeni x.
Thes e fellow have been rid ing nearly
every week up there. They ride well and
pr ovided the competition for the coas t
r ider s.
There were also a couple of riders
over from El Paso - Lee Anders on and
Tom Wahl er . They're probably suffering
from the same bug as the Tucson riders
- they don' t have enough events to reallY
sharpen up a fine competition edge.
