But Steve Scott, starting f r om well back I n the 60- rider pack pulled into the lead on the second lap. Penton- mounted Gary Bailey was moving up fast. On the thir d lap he took the lead from Scott and from then on It was Bailey to the wire. The 250cc Expert was the race everyone was waiting for . Was fac tory- spon sored Greeves malo-cr oss ace Bryan Wade capable of closing the door on Southern Califor nia' s best? A crowd full of anticipation watched screaming steve Scott maneuver ~s Bultaco to the number one slot on the first lap. Hard charging Suzuki-mounted Preston Petty came from back in the pack to take over second. wade was running about sLxth or seventh and far back from Scott. Then Wade showed what European mota-cr oss r i ders are made of by qui ck ly catching up to Pr eston Pelty. Pelty did a great Job of keeping him back but was soon f or ced to pull out with mechanical problems. Wade then set hi s si ghts on Scott and lap hy lap cui his l ead. On the last lap Scott crashed with Wade breathing down his neck . L AW NDAL E CYCLE LAWNDALE CROWELL CYCLES INGLEWOOD On Sunday the crowd must have increased ten times but It was still short of last year' s 38, 000 record attendance f or the day. The combined 350cc Novice, Amateur and Expert class started the happenings . Ossa -mounted Dave Aldana charged to the front and kept lots of space between him and John Rice on a Honda. Aldana was hot af ter for his second Hopetown win and no one could put him down. The climax of the day was the 500Cc Expert event. Wade gota better start this stlme and moved into the l ead on the second lap. Derek Rickman shot along the outside f rom the ver y back of the pack at the start, passing almost every r i der. However, Matco-mounted Pres ton Pelty was a solid second and Gary Bailey was holding down third on his Greeves. Both Rickmans were still in the pack but moving up fast. Soon they both passed the two Americans . Then Don Rickman pass ed br other Derek to tak e over second. On the same lap Wade went out , so it was the Rickman brothers finishing one, two . Pelty was third, the bestfln1shing American. Bailey fo llowed him . The Open Am ateur/Expert class was the last race of the two-day classic. The nation's number two ranked TI rider, Dusty Coppage, moved his Triumph into the front and held it all the way. Mike Haney , also on a Triumph, went unchallenged fo r second. Last year's win ner Gene Smith, Triumph again, had to settle for third. (Resul ts on page 20)
