Here are a fe w do's and don'ts a new
rider should kn ow before getting on the
slartlng Une. From the very beginni ng,
a rider should practice as muc h as
possible wi th a fair ly good desert bike:
Good suspension, bIg dir t tir es, a good
air cleaner , desert bars, and pr oper
gearing.
When you 've got the equipment shaped
UP, lake I t out In the desert. Prac tice
ridIng the sandy trails and sandwashes
until you get good at I t . Th e Idea l s to go
fast enough to get on top of the sand and
glide over th e top, with the front end
light.
Use body English to turn rather than
by steering the f ront wheel, slart early
Into the turn and go to the inside of the
groove. Keep your fee t UP, except for a
tight turn that you want to slide.
It helps considerably to go traiUng
wi th a good rider. Follow him and do
what he does, as It I s alway s easier to
show som eone then to tell hi m .
Before r acing you should feel confident
In the sandwashe s and be able to stand UP
on the pegs to go fastin r ough boondocks,
doi ng whe e l1e s over the bum ps. You
should also hav e mastered the downhills .
Never stop at the top to think about It j ust go down in l ow gear . Keep the bike
going straight , and keep the r ear wheel
turning slowly. Don' tlock up both brakes.
100 Feet Ahead
The thing I n deser t racing i s to look
a hundred fee t In f r ont of you . Get se t for
the coming terri tory, plan the proper
r pm ' s f or hi lls, the r i ght gears for
j umps, etc . You' re not going to get there
fast by looking down at y our front wheel,
worrying about small r ocks. Plan your
moves early so that you're smooth and
properly prepared f or that big r ock .
Now you' r e r eady for raci ng. Slart off
with a good piece of equipment, U you've
beaten -up your practice bike, get afresh
one. A l ot of good, new riders have kept
themse lves out of the trophies because
of used, tir ed equi pment - then becom e
,.

1. W
ear long sl eeves or a ja cket because the bushes can cut you up. 2. Join a club. You need
4. Wear long boots to protect against
friends In the desert. 3. Haye good brisk suspenslon
scrat ches from bushes. May also saye you f rom a broken l eg.
5. A good air cleaner I s a must.
6. A fork brace Is good to have In case you go down. Otherwise you may twist your folits 7. Si gn
up f or a Dlstrl cI number. On&oday pie plates fall off . 8. Use clean lenses In your goggles 9. A
ki dney bell Is alway s a g oo ~ Idea.
