Briggs got the Jump coming off the
line , but he was quickly headed by Mauger as they sl1d s ide by side through the
west turn and down the backchute in the
same order. Then, approaching the west
corner, Briggs made a sensational cut,
back to the inside of the track•..and It was
all over for Ivan .
Barry took the r ace In the ti me of
57:09. Rolling into the winner's ci r cle,
he was presented the gold cup by the
1937 World Speedway Champ, Jack Milne.
Also on hand to help in the cuppresentation was actor Keenan Wynn.

PACOIMA, cat., Nov. 2 - Four - time
World Speedway Champion, Barry Briggs
cut loose at Whiteman Stadium saturday
night, and sl1ced a piece off the record
for four laps set last week by his s ide kick, Ivan Mauger.
With an astounding burst of speed,
Barry went spinning and bucking his
merry way through four eye-popping
laps. And when It was all over, up went

Bast, .John Hateley, Norm Elledge, Steve
Scott, Eddie Mulder and Jimmy Stevens.
While the two semi Mains fell to Larry
Helnselman and Stu Morley.
The first and fastest of the two Main
Events was led all the way by Steve
Bast. He took the win over Sonny Nutter,
Norm Elledge, Rick Woods and "Wild"
Bill Todd. In the second MaIn, It was
Eddie Mulder taking the measure of Stu
Morley, Steve 'Scott, Johnny Carter,
Larry Heln selman and Ji mmy Stevens.
In the first of the three special Cup
Match races, Briggs beat Mauger In the
ti me of 28:55 for two laps. Ivan came
ripping back to nail Barry in 29:36.

ovation for the Kiwi Bomber. He'd walloped Mauger's old record by almost
two seconds.
Beyond any doubt, Barry " Snoopy"
Briggs let Ivan " Spr outs" Mauger know
that he expected the Wor ld Cr own to be
returned to him thi s season. And yet, all
of us who have seen Ma uger come out of
the Whiteman corners with that powerful
drive down the straights, reallze that the
28-year-old New Zealander Is about as
close to unbea table as anyone r ider can
be. So It should be one heckuva s eason.
Whiteman Speedway will have Barry
Briggs back satur day, Nov. 9. And all
kinds of racers are really serious about
unseating the Kiwi ace.

effort of young John Hateley, when, In the
eighth event of the World Cha mpions hip
lnvttattonal, he got his wheel In front of
both Mauger and Briggs , proceeding to
lead both of them for mos t of one lap .

time Keith Mashburn went down to defeat, not only once but twice .
Expert Dan Haaby was the fi rst to turn
back the high point l1ghtwelght r ider who
won all but four races in 16 attempts at
Ascot this s eason on the quarter mile.
