By Marie Layton SALEM, Ore., Oct. 27 - The Shamr ocks began their mud scrambles season here on a brand ne w course 19 miles east of Salem. There was a scarcity of mud but thrills and spills aplenty for the 300 spectators bY the 74 r iders who signed up for a run on the gr ass y, stubblecovered hillside. The slippery, sliding course ranged from flat straight stretches, a steep uphill climb (wIlere some of the r iders managed to co me aU backwards), both r ight and left hand cor ners, and s ome downhill fun. Without the expected mud It was generally fast, requiring abo ut a minute and one hal! to cover the .7 mile . The club has promised a dl!fer ent layout for each race, so perhaps the one disillusioned rider who thought this one " too spooky" will find the next one a little less so. Heats began at noon In 100cc, 200cc , 305cc and Open classes, the riders being channeled into the proper Mains by 1:30 p.m , There was no contest for first place In the Open A Main event with Ike Reed on a 360 Bul taking the lead of! the starting line and holding It all the way. Robert Hard -luck guy, Mike Clark (Greeves) came around the fi r s t lap In third position, but ca ught a rear wIleelgolng downhill, came off the highslde doing cartwheels, lit on his fee t, still with downhill momentum, but could n't get back to his bike In ti me to get it back In the race. A race between Bultaco riders In the 200Cc A Main had Don WatHo winning easily with Johnny Roner getting ever nearer , but not quite close enough to get by him. Tom G11k1son, after being passed In the third lap by Roner, settled down for a third place win. The 100Cc A Mai n was won by Jim Rober ts (Honda) who had been In 2nd place until a fall put the leader Tom Albert last. Hodaka r ider Tom Noakes fini shed s econd and Johnny Roner on his Suzuki, third. Randy Scott put on a gr ea t show In the 100 B on his Loblto, letting everyone get Into the first corner ahead of him, then passing them all In three laps. He forfeited his B Main trophy to get Into thE, A but fell In the first corner and was never able to catch up. He placed fifth In the last lap. All r iders who wanted to could enter the Sweepstakes at the end of the day . They all took off together and made a spectacular sight going around the first corner and over the steep hill. The 250 Greeves ridden by our cartwl1e el aerialIst, Mike Clark, was first overall In the Sweepstakes. Ike Reed placed first In the Open Class . In 200cc It was Johnny Rone r, Tom Noakes In the 1000c class. The Shamr ocks next race Is Nov. 10.
