New Senior, Ji m Wilson, was untouch abl e In the !lrst 250cc Seni or Moto, but Husky-mounted Russ Darnell, never gave the Greeves-rlder a chanc e to breathe . Lars Larsson mi ssed the start of the !lrst Moto and wasn' t abl e to bring hi s Husky UP Into contention. The next'Carlsbad Mota-Cross wi llbe the international on November 30 and December 1. Souther n Call!ornia riders have more experience on the Carlsbad course than any oilier so I t may well be that A mericans wlll take a few races against the Eur opean i nvader s. (Results on page 16) End of an Era • at Ascot By Dewitt Thuett ,. The final hal! mile of the season at A scot Friday, Nov . 8, may also be the final time for many of the ma chines In competition. This, because of the new r uling that wlll allow all machine sizes to jump to 750cc next.year In stead of the whiskered rule that held overhead valve r igs to 50Occ's. The Ascot track bas long been the stronghold for the 500' s and especlally the BSA Gold Star singl e. Already many owners and riders are planning on changIng to the larger , m ore economi cal twins f or next season. In the past dozen years the 500' shave won mor e than 90% of the races ov er the 750cc sldevalve machines. This was at Ascot. The story was diUerent on a nationwide basis . The Harl ey 750' s have already captured the hi gh poin t expert title at Ascot for the season wi th Mel Lacher responsible. H-D r ider Mer t L awwill not only won the Eight Mile National last m onth but set a new track r ecord as well. I t was the fi r st Harl ey win in ten years at the national. Next season all machines, regardiess of where the valves are l ocated, will rac e on the sam e inch-for -inch basis. The 500' s have won thestatehal!-mlle championship race eight out of the last ten years. This y ear, r i ders such as Lawwill, Lacher and Dan Haaby on the larger 750' s were pre-race f avor i tes over such 500 rider s as Gene Romero and DeWayne Keeter who have r i dden the smaller displacement machines all season lon g. Th e A scot championship race wlll also be the last tim e f or any of the Novice and Am ateur r iders to score points f or advancement In class. Racing begins at 8: 15 p .m , on the Gardena oval. .Q :.; !oJ -oJ U :.. U R. Baller (152) I s shawn here about tD pass a lell aw 25cc competi t or.
