The ads said fas t course, no water. That was the inte nti on of the Seafal r M.C. but there was a week of rain before Sunday. The cour s e was left with big water holes, deep grooves and trenches; a complete mud run In everything but na me . This Is what did the visiting southerners In. Only half the advertised Califor nia Moto-Cross Experts showed UP. Desert ace J .N. Roberts was riding his Husqvarna he brought by air freight. Long and tall Gary Bailey was there astride the new one-of-a-klnd prototype 360 Greeves (new frame, high-pipe, wi d e r range gearbox) . And ther e was the young and flashy Fred Edwards, of K & N Yamaha. But this was enough. These three really put out and the crowd at e It up, Saturday saw rain but the course was open for practic e . A two-session motocross school was held by J .N. Robe r ts and the s tuden ts r eally gotthelr money' s worth. At a dinner get-together there were fllms of pas t races, Including the first Pacific Coast Championship, narrated by the able Don Rhodes . On hand were guest personalities Rusty Harmer from Hollywood, a ctin g Grand Marshal, and Ronny Rondell, a Dlst. 37 Expert and TV stunt man . Rusty was In the Danny Thomas s how - Playing Danny's son. Now he' s 21, stlll an actor and a member of the Viewfinders M.C. (Calif.). Sunday da wned grey with r ain. At 9 a.m , the scrambles got underway. Muck and Mi re Just before one 0 ' clock, with all the scr am bles r un except the ir MaIn Events the three Expert classes lined up. Rus tY Ha mer led the m on a parade lap through the muck and mire on a DT-l. The track is laid out around an old r odeo with the fences s ti ll UP. The start area was grass , a good hundred yard s cam per to the fir s t tur n. ThIs was also the front straight. This fi r s t turn wasleft, a s low one. The n back over som e Jumps an d off Into the woods . Out of the woods finds you at the back of the rod eo grounds where It was hboards quite a bi t, makes a slow 180 degr ee turn, cros ses a wooden bridge then Into the trees again. Back In front of the pits Its downhill right back up, then down again. The 100cc Experts were firs t off twenty-five of them . They packed them~ selves te n abreast and charged Into the firs t turn. The Cal ifor nian , Fred Edwards, on Yamaha had the pole Into the corner but not the line and he cut outside the ti r es and up clos e to the trees In an effo rt to r etain his lead. For a second Freddy looked like he had It made. But when he got bac k on track the mud was 11 k e Ice and down he went. ThIs s narled the fi rst turn and Gary Bailey on his Penton took the lead , closely followed by Don Rhodes ( Bul) , Then the mag flywhee l fell off Bai ley'S Penton and Rhode s took the lead. Bill Langley moved Into second, catching Rhodes In the back section for the win. Frank Forester, Hodaka, pulled a strong third. In the second moto Lan gley (M-B) roared to another vic tory, Mark Niccoli (Hod .) second, an d (keeping In the family) Eric Forester (Hod.) thi rd . Langley took the lead in the third moto, Bailey, his cycle r epair ed took two laps to catch up. The n he pull ed away for the win. Larry Butt erfi el d on his Kawasaki fini s hed thi rd. Chain Break The fi r s t 250 Expert Moto was a Fr ed Edwards affair. Rand y Scott (Ya maha) dueled David ClIf t ( Kaw.) copping second Clift thi rd . The fa vor ite, Norm KoPp; was ba ck In the pac k. In the second heat hard charging Jim Einarsson (Kaw.) took the win, Dick Jagow (Gre .) second, Randy Scott thi rd. Kopp was leadi ng with a la p to go but broke a chain. Einarsson led all the way for firs t In the last moto Mike Clark (Gr e .) was second RanctY SkIver (C-Z), who had be en try~g hard all day, third. Kopp took fifth. Jagow dropped out . Final standings: J . Einars s on (ls t) Dave Clift (2nd), Mike Clark (3rd): We were disappointed that the Canadtans did n' t come down. They'have s ome a wfully good moto-cross riders . But somewhere In British Columbia was one of those 'once- a -year' r aces on the same day . We can expect them next time. During intermission the visiting Viewfinder and stunt man Ronny Rondell mad e his scary leap from the forty foot tower . Sandwiched between the Exper t motos were the scram bles finals . 105 r iders wer e trophied out of the 238 entered. Eac h winner al s o received a sm al ler trophy. The Seafalr M,C. really puts out. However , It was Bai ley on his red Greeves who grabbed the lead , foll owed by Jagow on his green one. Br oback, P owUn, Kopp, and Murphy al l gave chas e . Half a lap gone and the water gets to Bailey'S bike. Itfaulters; Jag ow takes the lea d. The pack sorts Its elf out and Jag ow s tretches his lead for the win, Hayward Murphy (Mal co) s ec ond, Mitc h Broback (Gr eeves) third . So the four - way due l between Ba lle y, Roberts , Kopp, and Jagow never matertanzed, Bailey and Robe r ts hadn ' t co me prepared to race In the stuff offe r ed . In the s ec ond heat Roberts took the lead but cam e off on the flrst lap, bef ore the wooden bridge, taking out a four - byfour In the process . Neither man nor ma chine was harmed, but the Husky refused to restart s o J.N. pushed to the pi ts . Bailey me anwhile was having watering problems again - first It would r un then It wouldn't. But he managed to finish, Jagow now had the second moto, Kopp (Bul taco) managed s e cond, Dick Poulin (Mal co) thi rd. Rober ts was on the pole again for the fi nal moto and once more grabbed a quick lead, foll owed by Jagow~ey, and Kopp. Jagow tried hard but couldn ' t get by .the soft-spoken desert hound .Balley barely held off K opp , And It ended that way, Roberts and Jagow pulling awa y fr om the thi r d and . fou rth place . Final tally had Jagow the winner. Kopp second, Robe r ts third . The Gr and Prix for the first thr ee flnl s her s In each class was a s hort one Jagow again needing only one lap to tak~ the lead. Bailey had to r ide his 100 havi ng not qualified his Gr ee ve s . Rober~ had to lea ve to ca tc h a plan e .
