The hill was grea t. It was quite obvious the Ca mpbell boys had done a lot of wor k to get It r ead y. The s mall bikes had more competition than the y've eve r had . A top runner like Larry Silva who us ually comes out on top found It was not as easy going as last year. Kei th Roessler came In fir!'tln the 200c c Novice at 8:82 seconds for a mighty fine job . The big boys should hav e been pl ea s ed about not having the bottom footage torn up as us ual , Th e P onte brothers run machines from 250cc up and do good work. Poor Joe Ponte had a wild flight when ' he came fiying ove r the 200 -foot top and wheeUed over and the bike wen t down one ravi ne and Joe fifty down the other . His only words as he was being dragged up were, at the 185 ft. mark. The ReveUers M.C ., with the help of a ne w club, the Red tops , had the hill looking scraped and slick. While waiting for the lagging riders to get set, the club offered the s lo pe to anyone who wanted to tryout a t the ir own r isk. Bill man aged to stop himseU about half way down but his powerful BSA made the trip end over end to the bottom alone busting the casing wide open. Since that tirst mon thly meeting, they have s anctioned several successtul tau rs , including Ramona Oaks, Camp Wishon, and a few one-day poker runs. Membership in the SCMA Is gaining r apidiy, now numbering close to 400. They are striving to build an organization that can give voice to the road rider, both club members and out-riders as well. Hel p! Police! With the usual minutes and reports out of the way, discussion of the SCMA Police For ce was the first order of business In1t1ated by ChaI r man Ellis " Smi tty" Smith at the Octobe r mee ting. This idea was initiated by Gino of the Freight Jockeys at the September meetIng. The best name (Police F orce sounds rather crude) and the duties and compos1t1on at the force were hashed over . Final decision called for a two-man committee to draw up a set of guide lines, and proceed from there at the next meeting. Upcoming Even ts P lans are nearing completion for the tirst Christmas party, to be held December 7, at the Ha wai ian Gardens Lions Hall. Admission to the 8 p.rn , semitormal party is $5, $2.50 for singles . Reservations should be malled to the SCMA's malling address, 5849 Tanglewood, Lakewood, canr, Riders were then reminded of the runs in th e near future. The Red Tops Panorama Heights Tour comes up Oct. 19 & 20, tollowed by an SCMA one-day run Nov. 10, an d the Nor wal k Rockets Turkey Shoot, Nov . 17. Cl ubs were also r em inded of the calendar that is to be ir oned out by the first of the year . The Assn. has offered to stagger dates with the RRC it the y are willing. If so, this would gi ve a pretty active calendar for 1969 . As of the Octo be r mee ti ng, the followIng clubs are SCMA chartered: Artesia Pioneers, Arvin Travelers, Bakersfield Roadrunners, Freight Jockeys, Nor walk Rockets, Or igi nals , Oxnard MC, Pistons, Red Tops, Revelier s, Tampa Roadrunners, and the Valleymen. g:, :-: c, 00 a; .... .... .... ~ ~ ~~,~p:~~~~~~':~~~~e~~~': ~ : ful . The most s hoc king and exciting even t was a t the end of the meet when Dick Oxford screamed a protest on Frank Dur so. There's always a lot of talk about protesting a tear-down on thi s one or tha t one, and this protest just turned out to be talk too . (Results on page 16) " Wha t' s my time. what's my time ?" A hardship trophy was set up for the rider who had the worst mishap. Dennis Pappanl went to the hospital with a serious knee injury . We all hope to see him back soon. Tom Elsa gave the 650cc a shake-up bY walking off with first place with a time of 6: 83. Old Dick Oxford f!Dally managed a trophy for second place on his Harley, his first at Halls Ranch in three years. The real surprise came In the 650cc Amateur/ Expert. Frank Durso and Albert Pone have been In secret desperate competition for years. Durso has always thrilled the crowds with his wild speed over. the top , Ponte finally got revenge. Duro on both runs barely made the 150 mark. Ponte walked away with 1st in the 250 Expert, the 650c c and top time of the day at 5:78 seconds. (Results on page 16) .... .... Ra cIng under the li ghts on F riday nig hts made a full schedule in con junction with the programs provided by oth er clubs on Saturday and Sunday . Th e Ins ta llati on of bleachers in the pit area and a new chalnlink fen ce have greatly increased spectator comfort and safety. The most outstanding attribute of the track Is the friendl y attitude of all cl ub me mbers which could be us ed as guide lines by other clubs in the di s trict. A job well done by Harvey Bakker and ha ts off to the Sport's Den. The 90c c Novice class was a slamba ng affalr with Ken Shelton on a hea r ty Hodaka gr inding out a victor y. Roseberry Roars The Ros eber ry Racing Team invaded the 120 ::xpert clas s wi th J oe putting the fini s hing touch on his claim to the Numbe r One plate . Younger broth er Frank had di ffer en t concepts as he pushed Joe all the way only to unload just belore the jump. Both rode Kawasakls. Th e 200cc Amate ur clas s found Ron Tobey goi ng to sleep at the throttle on LONG BEACH HONDA Action at the 'rlendly Hanford track. Steve Bray proved an oth er poi nt in fa vor of hi s theory that !he bigger the bike the s moo ther the ride as he won the 250 Amateur eve nt . Ste ve's advanceme nt from the 200 cla ss was miss ed li ke a br oken bone by the oth er r iders . Race P r omoter Harvey Bakker managed to find tim e to outlast T ad Sloane a nd Ken Wis e for a well- earned Victory in the 250 Exp'e r t eve nt . The BSA entries do mi nated the 500 Novice affalr with James Dol te rty and Don Harrell !inis hlng !irst a nd second . The Am a teurs chased Duane Shoc kley and a poten t Bultaco to no avaIl. Bobby Owens produced another ti r s t place effo r t to show he Is becoming one of the most promising Open Amateurs around . Owen's T r iumph ti nished ahead of two o ther Triumphs ridden bY Don Werner and Stan Nunes . BSA-powered 650 Expert Carrol Jackson proved impassable as he continued his drive for top District rider .
