Joe Smith rode his Laidlaw " knucklehead" dragster to top bike victory and defeated the well known Leo Payne in a special two-out-ofthree match race. In last Saturday's match race H-D couldn't lose, since each rider was Harley mounted. The outcome seemed solely dependent upon a rider's reflexes and the proper traction. Both machines were equal conten ders In the power department but Smith 's special clutch compound by Barnett delivered slippage that prevented those excess revolutions of waste at the asphalt and Smith delivered a "coup de gras" In hum1l1ating fashion to Payne. Tucson If ever a drag strip could be consider- ed a rerun of " To Hell and Back", Tucson quaillies as number onel An old des ert wash crossed the propos ed strip site and rather than provide a culvert under the asphalt, the strip was contoured to pr ovide a passage for flash Goods. A 40-Inch Triumph. at 130plus mph wouldactually beco me airborne at the finis h lightsl As a finale, the shutoff area resembled grandmo ther 's washboard. At this location, Dave Campos of Albuquerqu e, New Mexico showed an extra bounty of hair and secured top bike with a bes t elap sed time of 9.93 seconds at 148 mph. Lions Sonny Raslawskfe, on a short term leave from Uncle Sam's m1l1taryservice added yet another chevron to the Harley rank and file of winner s . Leo Payne accompanied Sonny to the WilmIngton location and between the two of them, they squeezed a winning elapsed time of 10. 88 s econds at 132. 85 from fifty-five inches of stock H- D Sportster. Drag r acing fans will not see Raslawski for another six months or until his present service obligation has expired, but from that time on it will be drag racing every weekend.
