Larry had blown his T DI series en gine in practice, and the bi ke had been titled with a street engine fr om another bike! lost his lead ove r Kidd in a minor shunt on the course, and spent the remaining laps sunning the bottom of cr ankcase Just to work his way back to s econd . Beall couldn't repeat his earli er upset in the 350Cc Final, ei ther. and the finis h was as before, except with BeaP. trailing • Red man. Bradley again came through in the Open Final but Beall, trying to gain a position, a ttempted to pass Davenpor t on the r ight - hand approach to the east bridge and miscalculated. He ccllrded with Virgil, went ove r the high s ide of his Triu mph, and rolled out of bounds. Story and Photos by John Blanton FORT WORTH, Tex., Sept. 22 - The Southwest Motorcycle Racing Association beld its last road race of the season at Green Valley Raceway with a large turnout d riders, for the Fort WorthDallas region bas the beaviest concentration d motorcycle racing support in the state. In the 200cc Production event Joe Joiner (180 Yamaha) snatebed the lead -rr om Mike Kldd (200 Bullaeo) in the first turn at the top of the bUl, but be slipped otI on the very next corner and spentalmost the wbole race ~ttlng up into tbird, behing David Kessler (180 Yamaha). Thomas Ballor (350 Honda) scored a surprising victory in the Open Production event, though Jet Tharp (350 Yamaha) tried valiantly to prevent it. Larry Piekos (350 Dueati) was tbird in the 350ce class, and in the same race David Broyles won 650Cc bonors wbtle Jim Lutz (Bullaeo), David Watkins (Bullaeo) and Chuck Meadors (H-D) were the 250cc leaders. In the GP racing d1vis ion the lOOCc event was won by Edward Green on an untaired Suzuki. Next came Darryl Hurst (IOOcc Yamaha) and Jim Lutz (10OCc Bullaeo). F or the first time this year we saw Bradley Unbeatable In the Open Heat Rus ty Bradley (Triumph) renewed his demoralization of the season's opposition. Leroy F er r y (75OCc H-D) was second in the ev ent, followed by Virgil Davenport (650 Triumph) and Larry Beall ( 650 Tri umph), Bryant was not ahle to repeat his 200cc win in the Final event, though at tt r s t he seemed about to . However, he The 1968 Texas road racing season has been a full one , with nine events scheduled by SMRA and one by the Kapital Katz M/ C. Compared with four for any previous year, tbings seem to be looking UP. Not the case, however. Jim Hall of SMRA plans to s chedule no races for next year, and the future of the sport in this area appears to rest with the motorcycle clubs. (Results on page 16) Washington Cro s s -Country Enduro Stor y . and P hotos by Vic Ebbutt MATTAWA, Wash., Aug. 22, '1968 - One hundred and seventy-two riders crossed Ihe finish line as the Everett Motorcycle Club and the community of Mattawa played hosts to 526 riders Sunday, August 22, for the second annual 100 mile cross-country enduro. Na tional number 97 Dick Jagow on a 360cc Greeves and young Norm Kopp of Spokane on his 250Cc Bultacoledfrom the start to the checkered flag and tintshed i n tbat order. As the se two came through town at the end of 42 miles, they raced the entire length of town side by side ELEVEN MINUTES ahead of the tbird place rider and at Checkpoint 6, they were still handlebar to handlebar . Then Kopp had carbur etor trouble but fixed it and still fin ished second . Jagow was also last year's winner, where he covered 102 miles in an incredible two hours and twentY-seven minutes. The small town of Mattawa is located alongside the Col umb ia River amid some of the wildes t, most desolate deser t in Easter n Washington and the real e state ther eabou ts consis ts of sand, s ag ebrush, r oc ks an d gul lies . As expected, the toll of both men an d machines was cons ider abl e , but 172 riders did manage to fin ish. The c ourse was laid out in a rather unique pattern which c ons isted of three giant loops with the motor cycles pas s ing through the ce nle r of town twi ce . Th is pe rmitted the s pectator s the opportunity of s eeing the co ntestants inaction. It also simplified the fueling s ituation. The Seattle Jeep Cl ub was pre s ent with fourteen Jeeps and twenty- s even me mbe r s and the ir assistance again proved to be invaluable.
