Montesa 360 Cappra Test and Photo by Bill Pettigrew Ouf of the crate, the Montesa 360 Cappra GP Is one of the faste st, most power to the ground, fine s t handling, nobones-about-it scramblers to be offered to the American enthusiast today. Despite a rather shaky reputation as to being re11ab1e In the past, the new Montesa line is now one of the most reliable oftered. The new bikes are comple tely different from their pred ec es sors an d ~~ LI U V?-..... Extra. Brass F or a little extra they have been giving high point trophies for the month In the Novice classes. The trophies have been the results are very evi dent In the record that the factory rider s, Ron Nelson and J ohn De Soto, have set In the last six months. Pr obably two of the hardes t riding men on the moto-cr os s circuit have not been able to cause one s ingle major engine or suspension proble m durIng the entire season. ThIs tribute to the sturdiness of the new 250cc Cappra and 360cc Cappra should not be looked on lightly. As tar as the California desert Is con cerned, Montesa r ider Tim Smith has proved the power and re11ab1l1ty of the new 360cc Cappra will be hard to match, much less bea t . With such a sim ple engine as ts used In the many big bore two- strokes available today , It is an Incr easing wonder how so much power Is extracted fr om these machines. The Montesa 360 Is rated at 38 bhp (brake-horsepower), which puts It right up there with the rest of the top t1ve competitors In Its class (two -strokes). The 360 engine Is not an enlarged version of the 250cc but a completely new unit. The barrel, head and crankcase are made ot aluminum. The cylinder liner Is nickel-alloy. The crankshaft Is carried by a whopping four ball bearings with a caged needle roller bearing used at the lower end of the rod. Loose needle rollers are Incorporated at· the small end of the rod. The famous Montesa clutcb design that Incorporates seven all-steel driver plates and eight driven plates should prove to be near Indestructible. Straight cut gears are a help In transmltung the gr os s power to the four-speed transmission . Granted It could be dl!tlcult If an inexperienced rider were to attempt to start the 360, as all he would end up doing Is to load It UP. The kick - s tarter does have a very sh ort thorow and doesn' t turn the engine over t1ve times like that of the othe r brands , but a li ttle care and the proper procedure should make It a one, two, or three- kick s tarter most of the time . There are two diffe rent set-ups available to the prospective buye r and these are in the form of the American vers ion, which Is blue and has the 19-1nch tr ont end, and the orange Continental ve rsion with the moto-cros s gearing and the 21Inch fr ont end. There Is also an optional "3.5 gallon tank available tor the desert people tha t will r eplace the standard 2-1/4 gallon rig. The Montesa 360 Cappra GP Is certainly a man' s motorcycle and will take you to the winner' s cir cle In style If you have enough halr to keep thi s superpowered Spanish pr oduct on the pipe . The 360 Is now available tor $1140.00 which puts It In the lower price range for this size of two-stroke . : . ~ : : : 8 • ~ - - ---~--..
