Wayne Rayland was running In the firs t len
trall blkes unti l he was retired with mechanical
woes.
Jack Morgan, the pe rpetual number one
tral lblke racer, again triumphed ove r a
large and eager band of lOOcc r iders on
his trusty Hodaka,
Two hundred and seven ty-five r ider s
showed up for the des er t bash, and all
classes were to go three loops of this
fast 35-mlle course. The big bores went
off first: Ber gquis t made his usual fast
start on the outside, an d held It on until
he had the l ea d. Just past the s moke
bomb, a t a small, sandy hill, Howard
Beach, #20, was traveling In second spot,
followed by J .N. Roberts, #2, on his
Husky . Roberts gained the lead position
about half-way around the firs t loop, but
was forced to give up the chase to his
pursuers when he got two flat tires as a
r es ul t of the rocky course.
For the other riders In the back of the
pack, ther e was always the powdery dust
to keep the m from seeing anything .
Danny Kline, #'Ix on a 250 Greeves curr ently running fourth in point s tanding s ,
uuloaded In the dus t s torm , and didn' t
eve n know wha t he hi t until everyone had
passed and the dus t settled .
Into the pits after the first loop Bergquist held the lead , trailed by Steve
Kir k, #27, an d Gary Cole , #5x on a 250cc
Hus ky. Moving Into fourth was a hot
newcomer , G. Fitzger ald .
The course was pretty well worked
ove r by the second loop, but Ber gquis t
was n' t about to let a li ttle thing li ke that
s low him down; he just " let It all hang
out," and built up a bigger lead. Cole
had moved into second, followed by a new
contender , Tom-Mute , #71x, mounted on
a 250cc Husky .
The first man to get the checkered
flag on the third and final loop was
Ber gquist, on the Fe rgus & Grl!tin-tuned
machine, adding another overall win to
his ever -growing list of victories . Next
man across the line was Cole, and third
was Amateur Tom Muto. Fitzgerald,
#153mx, did a job to be remembered
fi nis hing fourth ove r all and first NOviC~
