"" ..; "" "OJ .Q B t.> 0 Story an d Photos by Dick Wrigh t CI) :.: :c: LUCERNE VALLEY, Cal. , Sept. 22 - Southern California's top lightweight desert rider , Larry Bergquis t, took another overall win 011 his very fast 250cc Bultaco, in the dusty hundred-mile Hare Scrambles presented by the 100 M.C. r.J r.J -J o o ~ Larry Bergquis t (8881) and his trusty a un aee 250cc Pur5ang have managed to snatch many overall wins this yea r. on a 250 machine. Doc Bryce , #14, pulled In fif th on his reliable Hus ky to gr ab the first 500cc Expert gold. The old deser t fox Ja ck Byers, #3, was next, taking fi rst Open Expert for a good day's work. Fi rst Open Amateur honors went to Bob Ste war t, Tri umph-mounted #56. ARE WE PROUD? Trailbikes The trallblkes were flagg ed off ten minutes after the large bores , and by the ti me they r eached the small, r ocky hill, the y found It still cr owded wi th leftover big bikes . Holding onto the lead was Wes Anderson Jr. #4, followed c losely by Tom Hoyle, #31, both astride Hodakas, They In turn were being chased by Jac k Froelich, #2 on a Bullaeo. Jack Morgan, the pe rpetual number one tral lblke racer, again triumphed ove r a large and eager band of lOOcc r iders on his trusty Hodaka, Two hundred and seven ty-five r ider s showed up for the des er t bash, and all classes were to go three loops of this fast 35-mlle course. The big bores went off first: Ber gquis t made his usual fast start on the outside, an d held It on until he had the l ea d. Just past the s moke bomb, a t a small, sandy hill, Howard Beach, #20, was traveling In second spot, followed by J .N. Roberts, #2, on his Husky . Roberts gained the lead position about half-way around the firs t loop, but was forced to give up the chase to his pursuers when he got two flat tires as a r es ul t of the rocky course. For the other riders In the back of the pack, ther e was always the powdery dust to keep the m from seeing anything . Danny Kline, #'Ix on a 250 Greeves curr ently running fourth in point s tanding s , uuloaded In the dus t s torm , and didn' t eve n know wha t he hi t until everyone had passed and the dus t settled . Into the pits after the first loop Bergquist held the lead , trailed by Steve Kir k, #27, an d Gary Cole , #5x on a 250cc Hus ky. Moving Into fourth was a hot newcomer , G. Fitzger ald . The course was pretty well worked ove r by the second loop, but Ber gquis t was n' t about to let a li ttle thing li ke that s low him down; he just " let It all hang out," and built up a bigger lead. Cole had moved into second, followed by a new contender , Tom-Mute , #71x, mounted on a 250cc Husky . The first man to get the checkered flag on the third and final loop was Ber gquist, on the Fe rgus & Grl!tin-tuned machine, adding another overall win to his ever -growing list of victories .
