Valley Red Devils, went down to defeat at
Whiteman Stadium as the bIg TIger paw

the L.A . T iger power with five straight
wins (all of the m establishing new fast
times for the evenIng) y et the hapless
Red Riding Devils got the very devil
kicked out of th em as they sunk to a wilt~

What do you do when y ou are facei:1
with the pr ospect of 30 race enthusiilst5
thirsting for the thrill of attending a
national motorcycle e'lenf? '
You get them all together, brIght and
(ugh) early and herd them all Into an air
conditioned charte red bus.
Then you load all th e goodi es. Starting
wi th sufficient quantities of Coor s, large
amber containers of scotch, bourbon and
Vodka, pl us som e squeezmgs of the grape
and four. and a half gallons of various
mi xes. Well Ice d down I n the por tabl e
bar that the bus c ompany th oughtfully
nrnvlnAd.
"O. K. Mr. Bus Driver, would you be
so kind as to transp ort this screaming
mob to Sacramento?"
The expe c ted monontony of a Iong ride
didn't develop as Ernie Browning announc ed to all and one that he I s putting
himself on a strict schedule . Only one
nip per 15 minutes. And it tak es 10 hours
to make the trIp.
The trIp was arranged bY the Silv er
Ci ty Scr amblers M .C . of Las Vegas, as
a yearly ' social event with the 25-mile
National at Sac our destination.
It' s amazing how m uch hidden talent
comes out after a body has had a cup or
two of sauc e, as B11l H11l can testify.
However , the rigors of ente rtaining the
entourage fo r f our hours and f or tifying
himself In between soon brought on a
case of rigor mor tis.
Up and over Donner Pas s, thr ough the
beautiful cool fo r ests of th e High Sierras
and down Into the valley to Mr . Reagan' s
backyard.

watch the races.
Nine-thirty a.m, Sunday and away we go
to the Falrgroundsl
Only one thing was wrong. Drew, the
head Travel Agent and the bus driver had
become LOST. After stopping an elderly
gentleman and decipherIng his directions, we f1nally found Aggie's palace
of race.
Braving the mile long ticket lines we
settled ourselves Into a long, but thoroughly enjoyable day at the races. WatchIng Nix nix them all.
Then back to our $30,000 limousine
with a dinner stop In Reno, we again
raced the dawn for home. Some just
making It I n time for work.
SynopsIs? All was great, super, neat,
fine, out of sIght, and the only way to fly.

Also, young John Hateley, a star of the
- Valley DevUs, lost two races that he
obv iously could have won . And the only
reason he lost was because he was trying
to block for his teammate. Even Gary
Ni xon, when he was out for pr ac tice at
Whiteman a few weeks back, stated that
Hateley would bec ome one of the finest
r Iders In. this country 'wi thin a couple of
y ears .
Speaking of NIxon, we'll pr obabl y be
seeing him out here f or the speedway
races within the next two weeks. Also,
Fred NI X, Gene Rom er o and Mert Lawwill have expressed the desire to put In
theIr appearances.

Receiving the hardluck trophy, and the
f r ee Castrol 011, for the speedy evening,
was the Flyin' Dutch One, Skip Van
Leeuwen. Skip, making his first appearance here at Whiteman, slid his btke
right down onto the engine cases In two
turns, lost It both times, and though
hopelessly beaten I n the heat race, kept
getllng up and coming back for more.

I n the Maln Event, Nor m Elledge had a
bi g l ead , but the bike Just flat quit as
they cam e off the '!Inal turn, allowing
Larry Helnselman the win.
In the Grand Finale, for the four high
point team riders of the night, I t was
steady Eddie Mulder all the way f or the
fastest win of the bunch: 59:38 1
Fantastic Performances
Back to the races. Oth er fantastic
rides, as usual, were turned In by the
L .A . Tigers: Paul Conser rlere and Jack
Skip Van Leeuwen (cenler) participated In
same of the glary of the Whiteman Speedway
shaw. Even brought along his awn trophy
queen, but he was nata wlnnedhls first time

Sonny Nutter quite cleverly turned his
f r ont wheel all the way to the left lock
stop. Th e bi ke promptly- whiPPed through
all 360 degrees of a perfect circle, at
~eedl The centrifugal force of this tremendous bit lifted Sonny a full two filet

he continued to hol d onto the bars, taking
off after the r est of the pack In hot pur-
