YAMAHltS ON THE GOOD SIDE NOW Two weeks ago a letter appeared In your paper with regards to the stand taken by Yamaha International and Honda on the wearing of helmets. Yamaha International has been asked many times In recent months their offlc1al " Stand" regarding the wearing of helmets, not only In Callfornla but In all other states. Yamaha, International has always, and will continue to be In favor of all riders and passengers wearing helmets at all times. However, we do NOT feel that a compulsory Helmet Law requ1rlng cyclists to wear helmets should apply In any state. Could be the prices are high, but I have found that good thlngs don't come cheap . The track at Sacramento was beautifully prepared, and I thlnk It was real - nice f~r him to let the restln free. I only ." wish lie could come to Sprlngfield and put .." a race on there. But bring his whole crew - flagmen, track malntenance and officials. But be sure to bring Whitey the Starter, We think he Is the best. But we never had a J .C. Agajanlan to promote, and our people did not have the know-how to cope with a tew bums. We think he could do this. Also I thlnk halt-mUe racing at Ascot v~ Is the greatest In the country. To put that many races on and have that many riders bac k home, It would take our referee and offlclals a day and a night. KENNETH RENNER San Bernardino, Callf. GREENHORN GRIPE Congratulations to the A.M.A. for cracking down on the Pasadena Motorcycle Club tor the way the results of the Greenhorn were handled. I was assigned U50C by mail and when I got to the startIng line there was another 50C. No one was wUllng or able to stralgbten out the error at the start. SInce I completed both Saturday and Sunday, I was surprised to see I was not listed among the finishers. In order to find out If I had been dlsquallfled I wrote the club and enclosed a stamped, selt-addressed envelope. So far they have not had the courtesy to answer my letter. 'IbIs behavior leads me to believe that the local " hots hoe" 50C got credit for riding and since I am a newcomer to this area, the club figured It didn't matter whether I rode or not. I enjoy competition, but this Incident makes me wonder 1! It Is really worth the eUort, particularly If an event does not seem to be fairly run. GORDON PORTNER San Dimas, Calif. Last week I thought I was being fai rly kind to the Dir t DIggers regarding the advertis ement of their upcoming event. I don't thlnk I implied or Interred that the members of the Dirt Digger s were trying to do anything dishonest as a general member s hip. However , several members of the Dirt DIgger s are very well infor med (and have been over the last several years) concerning the necessary forms and permission needed to advertise an International event. Also, several of the members were very much aware that the Dirt Diggers did not accept the contract conditions to have the E~ as did the otber promoters. However, some members are not always completely Informed about all things that go OIl withln anorganizat1on. They shouldprobably become a little more Informed bafore ma1dng statements regarding thlngs they bave no knowledge of. Europeans Draw Crowds I thlnk it has been pretty obvious to everyone Interested In motorcyc1lngthat a great many motorcycle enthuslasts and spectators are Interested In seeing the Europeans compete against our local riders. 'IbIs Is borne out by the tact that • at the recent Hopetown event the number • of spectators was certainly nowhere near what the Dirt Diggers expected nor what was obtained last year when the Eurnpeans participated. In contrast, at the recent event held at Saddleback featuring just two European riders, there was the largest number of spectators to ever attend a Saddleback event. We understand this figure was somewhere near 5000paid spectators. So at least we can assume at present that the Europeans riding In this country are ot Interest to the motorcycling spectators. We, too, are sorry that an agreement could not have been made between the promoters and the Dirt Diggers. More Speedwa.y? What's this rumor that we PiCl< up In the speedway pit area at Ascot Park about the possibility of r unning speedway bikes again next year when the season opens , perhaps on a night other !han Friday ? Could It be that there Is some Interest in speedway shown by the spectators and the posslhility that the course was not correct for speedway bikes? Also, what is this we hear.about another speedway being constructed over In the northeast section of town for the 1969 season - lrwlndale area? We hear from goodauthority that some of the top old-time speedway racers are Involved In this one, which means It should be built right and have the right promotional work done to make It a success. 8-Mile Entries Pour In Entries are pouring In for the 8-Mile AMA National Championship at Ascot Park OIl Saturday night, October 12th. It looks as though the AMA Grand National riding championship wIll be decided at Ascot on that night. Gary Nixon, Fred N1J<, cal Rayborn and Bart Markel are all In contention for the title and will compete In the nine event card tha* night.
