By To m Finlay CARLSBAD, Cal1!. , Sunday, Sept. 15 Fir s t off were the " fif tie s" . followed by the ligbtwelght pr oducti on road races. The fif ty fi eld soon was left wltb only two running , but be who goes tbe di s tance tak es the brass, as Ed Clement and Sid Cha mbe r s said. In tbe production scrap, Rodge r Wood (Br idg es tone) and Rod Schmidt (Honda) were fi r s t and s ec ond borne In the 200. There was a prote s t In this class. s o lIle results are bei ng beld . The 250- 1DOOCc P roduction race was an upset as the us ual Orien tal dominance of the 250 ended wben Ted Je welland his Bultaco took the class . He was followed by Walt Garnett (Suzuki). Jim Cben bagged the 350 af ter a tussle with Jerry Greene (Br ldge stone) . George Kerker pulled the us ual Nor ton win In tbe Open. The 100-125-175 saw the two 125' s running in the 175 class , an d Ralpb Le Cl er cq s erved notice that he and his Ducatl Inte nd to try and capture the class with a late s eason drive. An early lap challenge by Al Leo nard. l ooking good after a long layoff, went down the drain when the chain on bl s ride parted. Mike Lane. doing whee lies each lap through the pit turn, captured the 100 on his Mel Dlnes en Hodaka. Sidecars Sideways " Wow," was the unanimous expletive of the tans that lined the pit bend to watcb the ha cks slide sideways through the dlttlcult turn. Doug Bingbam/Ed Wade and Bob Bakker/ Bob Bender scrapped all the way to the flni s b. Bingham even did a giant whee11e going through this section. Following, and loo king for a mistake. was Bob Johnson/Mike Van Slam! Bang! PaWl . The fi nal race was the 350-1000. which featured Jody ge tting oft to a poor start and working his way UP. In tbe lead In the early laps came J im Cben ( Honda). followed by George Kerke (Nor ton) and J ohn McGUllvray (Triumpb). McGUllvray and Kerker pulled away fr om Cbe n, with Nicholas In bot pursuit. Nicholas oversbot tbe last turn and bad to ride like mad to gain. Just as Jody was attempting to out- brake the other two. Mc Gillivray' S engine exploded In a buge putt of smoke. Kerker barely missed hi m , In fact bad to duc k tram flying debris. and Nicholas actually bashed fairings with McGUllvrays sliding bike. Thanks to some s killed riding, all but McGillivray made it out of tbe corner. A fine day of racing was witnessed by the faithful. Atbena, Oregon 97813. the Aces are big enough to handle the situation and a run a.t a new tracltalways runs into shakedown pro b 1ems until people find out just where exactly everything is; secondly it's neat tbat one of the oldest clubs In the DIstrict will be bosting the first run at tbe new traclt. because with all the woes other clubs have suffered the 4-Aces have still been able to cootlnue tbrowlng both desert and scrambles runs tbat are good. -Race Of ChlLmpionlt 1"- ' ,.... \" ~~- . . ~ . &%... . .. ". ...... Hun~n ~ I . ... ..... new Beach scrambles course opens September 29tb with the Four Aces tbrowingtheir point run there. This makes us happy on two counts; first TIle "Old TImers " race w1ll take place about 1 O'clock. We have changed a bit from the original conception of having only r iders whose names appear on the Di s trict 37 Perpetual Heavyweight Trophy and are Inviting those also who have made a name for themselves, especially back In "the good old days," to enter. You'd be surprised at the number of guys who for years were running around foartb. titth and so In the top ten back Mike McGlJlhra, and his WSly Trfu..h are 1II0Wll h.e try laclD slay aheadof Norton ace It. . GltOl'p Kerker wIIea his erI&t.. blew l aID a clOlld of amolt.. when to be a top rider you bad to ride both desert and scrambles for points who never got number one but who In tbeir day could have given one beck of a battle to the current top chargers who think speed Is a1lJ Where are you , Bob Bandgren? The trophy lists back to 1952 wltb Bud Ekins establishing a record on It that bas yet to be equaled by anyone else. The 4-Aces advise us that tbe man who be1d llIl In 1951 wants to ride and that Is Greeves distributor Nic k Nicbolson who Is also dona ting tbe trophy for the race. Ni ck will really be a contender as will Jerry WUllngbam , tbe latest name to enlist. So. come on you " Old TImers" (that name bas nothing to do with age either) It you t1ll tbe above category of having done well for a few seasons etc•• let us hear from you, care of Cycle News. We have a suspicion that we sbould have called this the " Race of Champions" instead of " Old TImers" because there's not one of tbem that Is exactly doddering about yet and tbey may give some of tbe YOllllC blood riders a fe w jolltesl Have You Entered '!he Bi, One? CorrlganviDe entries are now open. (Hurray l) But, now bear this. Jim Peterson. the DD's President advtses that ONLY the official DIrt DIgger entry for m s will be accepted. Where to get these? Well. It you be10nc to a club your rep. should have picked them up at the last District meeting; shops will ban tbem and a tasclmlJe appeared lastweek In cy cle News. Over tbe years the DIeger s haTe bad much troubles wlthpeople sending In entry forms that d!dn't eVeD make sense and tben blowlnli' their cool when tbe club bad to reject tbem for some reason or anotber. So. to make It alittle easier on themselves (they do throw the biggest race of tbe year r know) they are puttIDg their foot down about tbe entries and we're all for It.
