RACING ORANGE CO., Cal.•, Sept. 4 - Mark Kruse on his 100cc Bultaco was able to maintain his dominance of the 100cc flattrack events, winning both the Trophy Dash and the MaIn Event Wednesday night, but with some difficulty. A brand new rider to short tracking at Orange County, Wayne Hosaka (Hodaka) and last year's 100cc champion, Russ Robinson, gave Mark all the competition he could handle In the Main. Wayne got by Mark several times and led the eventfor short periods, but Mark was able to recapture the lead, finishing In first place, with Wayne In second and Russ In third. Since the 100cc class Is now competing on Castle Rock windup By J .K. Lacey CASTLE ROCK, wasn., Aug. 31 - On a cool windless night the Mt. St. Helens M.C. finished their Class C racing season with a 3-Star TT on their famous Fairgrounds track. With the National at San Jose the following day entries were down some but that certainly didn't deter from the evening's events as these races were probably the best we've seen all year. Novice a ction saw Trophy Dash winner and the Washington State Novice point leader Squlre Tomasle win the Main with a wlre-ta-wlre ride but It wasn't a runaway as was the Dash . Bill Elder (H-D) and Jack Mott (BSA) were as one thru-out the race never more than a few lengths behind the unconcerned Tomasie (Bill), and when Mott finally passed Elder he put the pressure on Tomasle but the laps ran out. Only feet separated the trio as they crossed the line, a fine ending to the Novice careers of these three who, next year, will return todo battle as Amateurs. Last L ap Ultimatum In the Amateur go Trophy Dash winner Jimmy Jones (Trl) did the deed In the MaIn but that race was something else. Steve Holton grabbed the lead with Jones second, Ike Reed (Tri) third . Lap seven of twelve and suddenly Reed dives under both of them and builds up a small lead, and two laps later Jones pushes past Holton. Jones, Amateur to beat at Castle the quarter-mile course, the competition has been steadily Increasing over the last few weeks . This Is evidenced by the Increase In the crowd and also by the . pay-off going to the riders. In the 250cc class, Randy Ellis was able to capture the Trophy Dash but was not quite so fortunate In the Main Event, with Stan Rogers coming out #1 and Randy In second place. In the top six finishing positions, two gentlemen from the east coast, Bob MaIers and John Zwerlcan, both on Harley-Davldsons, finished in third and sixth spots, respectlvely. They had some gratifying comments regarding our short trackers, since they didn't know the fellows out here could ride the quarter- mile as well as they do. Dave Aldana finished fourth, Dave Lenar fifth. Aldana Outdoes ' Em In the 100cc TT event, Dave Aldana fared much better than In the short track, winning both the Trophy Dash and the MaIn Event. The Main was a repeat of the 100cc short track event, with Wayne Hosaka finishing second and Russ Robinson in third spot. Rock, really put his taients to work closIng on Reed and caught the ' 'Salem Flea" by the yellow flag lap. Out of the last corner they charged , Jones down under Reed high but with a straight shot to th~ flag; then here comes Jones, letting him self drift out so that there Is only one path to the finish, his path, and Reed had the choice of the fence or let off. He chose the latter, Jones won, Holton third . The 250cc TT Trophy Dash was wonby a rider we haven't seen for quite some time, R.W. Ring on a Husqvarna who came up from San Diego. He took the Dash but had trouble in the Main and was a DNF. Finishin g . In first spot In the 250cc TT Main was John Sprague on a ' Bultaco. Dave Aldana was second on his Ossa and Jim Peterson (Kawasaki ) finIshed third. In the 500cc and open TT event, Dave Lenar on a BSA captured the Trophy Dash, but had some problems in the Main and did not finish. The Open Main Event wne to Jim Peter s on on a Triumph. Right behind Jim was Jerry Moriarty on a Triumph, and, to the s ur pr is e of many, In third place and doing an excellent job was Ray Vander pool on a 350cc Yamaha. Ray had to ride back to back in the 250cc TT as well as the Open TT, finishing sixth on a 250 Yamaha, and then getti ng on his 350cc to ride In the Open Main and finished in third place. Next Wednesday night, spectators as well as riders, can look forward to another Interesting night of racing at Orange County Speedway. I SAID SACHS Foggy Finals Fog was rolling In as the Novice hash finished so Ref. Dave Welsch called the Expert Main to the line . During the 15lap event one could look across the track and see only grey shapes as the Experts vie d, but towards the last the fog lifted s omewhat and the show took on a different form . Fir s t Into the corner was Harley mounted Emil Ahola, hotly pursued by T.L . Hoglan (Nor ), Dan Holton (Trl), and Harold Schnitzer (Trl) . Peoria third pla ce finisher Sonny Burres lay back in seventh. Ahola charged on, showIng great form throwing the Harley around and certainly enjoying himself, while In the pack Holton got by Hoglan into second and T.L. slipped further Into fourth as Burres SUddenly got with It passing Dave Grout (Trl) and Schnitzer then Hoglan. Holton and Burres contested each other for the remainder of the race, closing on Ahola, but It ended that way, Emil with the win. So brings the close of another season, a thoroughly enjoyable one as the races by the Mt. St. Helens M.C. are always goodies and very seldom end In a parade type event.
