The American Cycle Association's genial president Wes Cooley recently astounded the motorcycle fraternity when he announced plans for a l2-hour motorcycle road race. The race 18 now a realIty. 11 w1ll be run on Sunday, Sept. 29th at Wlllow Springs Raceway In Rosamond, CaUf. Machines must be stock produc~on motorcycles with a few modlflca- tlons II1Jowed for safety' a sake. The race will · start at 9 a.m. and will run IIIlt11 9 p.m., or until tile last machine atops runntnc. A large number of entries 18 expected. There ' will be practice on saturday, Sept. 28, and post entries will be allowed. Lights must be In worldDg order as the last two to three bours will be run after dark and Wlllowbasnotrackllgbts. Would you belleve there Isn't even a hint of dayllght at _ 5:00 a.m.? . After a leisurely r ide we arrived at Democrat Hot Springs, a resort high In the canyon of .the Kern River, 23 mlles east of Bakersfield. At 11:00 a.m., tile temperature was a bit too warm for standiDg In the sun, but Ideal for swimming , and after s igning in we Immediately changed to our swi m suits and tnnk A flying leap Into the river. Words just can't express how wonderful that cool water felt after a bot r ide across tile desert. The Saturday night dinner Included a cbolce of cblcken or swiss steak, three kinds d salad, potatoes and gravY, roll, and beverage. The cbow Une was loog and slow moving, but It was worth It; the food was very good and the helpings were generous. Consisting of a girl lead guitarist and vocalist, a go-go dancer, and two boys carrying the rythm on a guitar and drums, those kids real1Yput out for the road riders. I've neverheard better music - real loud and pretty foot stomptn- music that just wouldn't let you sit still, and the gang danced until they had bllsters on their heels. Uniform jtxlglDg and games 01. athletic skill were held from 8:00 to 11:00 Sunday morning, and the trophy winners locked in mortal combat In the Boot Race, Tug d War, and Wheelbarrow Race, to name only a fe w. After tile contests, Bingo games were held In tile shady patio of the resort lodge. Some riders muffed their chances at a trophy and left for home Sunday afterDOOn. Eaton, a practicing hypnotist from Bakersfield, demonstrated his pro f e s s ion a 1 skill. Asking for volunteers from tile audience, he hypnotized four subjects so completely that be had them believing all sorts of fantastic things, much to tile deUght of tile audlence. In the past, the Pine Cone Tour bas ended In Carson City , Nevada, but many riders felt that Nevada was too far to travel, so tile destination was changed to Democrat Hot sprlDgs lbls year.
