TAKE GET WOODS AND O'BRIEN GET Jack O'Brien willi ~Is franl wh••1 slnlpl for a chan,.. By Mike Capallte SOUTH GATE, Cal., Sept. 15 - Jack O'Brien was the man to beat In tile heat races Sunday nlgbt at TrojanRacewayas his smooth style carried him to victory In all five et his heat races , but he couldn't seem to f1Dd the right combination for the Trophy Dash and the Main Event. The heat races saw more than the usual number of crasbes as !be riders all seemed a little over-eX!luberant in their efforts. Randy Ell1s bad to ca1lita night as he took a header In the 12th heat that wiped out his front wheel, but the big one was in tile 13th heatwblch the superstI tlous will note. The first thing ott the line, Gary Jones (JAP) spWedin theflrst corner and when be went down, Rick Woods (Eso) ran Into him. The starter for the evening was Elliott Schultz who was out et action due to an injured hand suffered earlier 1n ak, On the re , WOOi!S' and SOimy 1'fatter (Eso) were side by side when suddenly Nutter lost adhesion for a second, drifting Into Woods resulting In a spectacular spill with Woods going end over end and the machine coming to res ton top 'ofhim• . Luckily he was uninjured. The race was restarted for the third time, again Woods and Nutter went at It side by stne, but this time they both remained uprlghtand as they came out of the corner, it was Sonny pulllng away and he kept ahead to the finish. The C Maln was all Bill Todd'S (JAP) as he showed real good form In taking the win over Dave Bastain who finlshed In second on a machine that is powered by a Matchless engine , an d although lower on horsepower It made a very good show. 1ng against the exotic iron. The B Mai n was an ups et as Norm Elledge (Esc) took over the lead ahead of Jim Posey (JAP) an d Larry Heinseiman (JAP) whom he bad already beaten in the heat races, but back In fourth place was Greg Haserot (Eso) who bad beaten Posey and Elledge In the heats. In the A Main, it was evident that Steve Scott (JAP) was out to make uptor the loss in the Trophy Dash when he had chain problems as he was eager on the line, but when the flag went up, It was Rick Woods charging off In the lead with his borrowed Eso sliding like gangbusters, behind him came Jack O'Brien (Eso) and Sonny Nutter (Eso) with Scott on his JAP In the fourth slot, but this was not the place in which Steve Scott was content to remain as he moved up on Nutter and took over his position, he then moved up on 0' Brien, but found it a little more difficult to get around him until Jack bad a little trouble getting a bite coming out of the corner and Steve powered around him. His next obstacle was Rick Woods, a hard man tofollowas he charges hard into the corner, carrying It a little farther and a little harder then throws it sideways real quick s'; that instead of easing Into a broadslide It digs in and slows him up before it slides and makes it very difficult to chase hi~ in the turns. Although Steve was forcing hard all the way, he couldn't make it. Speedway action will return to Trojan again this Sunday with !be Time TrIals starting at 6:30 lII1d the races at 7:15.
