IMPROVED SPEEDWAY SHOW AT A C S OT By Mike Ca pallte Photos by Dennis Gr eene GARDENA, Cal ., Sept. 6 - The shortenIng of the team races from fourteen heats to ei ght , combined with the r emovIng of some of the heavy cushion from the track to make fo r better sliding, was met with app roval by the growi ng number of Ascot Pa r k speedway fans Friday night . The new program al lowed the team ri ders to doff their team jer seys af ter the team events and ride in the regular progressive program. The team riders, whoare mostly the cream of the crop, also went for this new sys te m as it gave them a chance a t a larger share of the purse. The tea ms were pretty well eve nly ma tc hed, but the Fal cons with Jack 0' Brien as Cap tain and Stev e Scott as No. 2 man had a little more ,going C or them as they swept over the Flye rs with a total of 29 points to 19 points. Fl yers Ca pta in Paul Cons er r ler e ea r ned seven poin ts to O' Br ien' s nine, but It Is Interesting to note that the heats which pitted the two team captains together found Paul havtng trouble in the first one and finishing fourth while Ja ck took the win. from each semi goi ng to the Handicap Mal n with 3 and 4 tra nsferring to the Handi cap Cons ola ti on. Winne r s of the four fastest heat c omp r ised the Trophy Dash . Good, Close Heats In the first heat, SlIdln ' Steve SCott had the way around as he ran off from De Wayne Keeter and Eddie Mulder , whi le the second heat was a r eal 1-2-3 battle between John Ca r te r, Ric k Woods and Sonny Nutter with the checkered flag going to them in that order . In the third heat, it looked like it was going to be a Paul Cons er r ie r e nig hI as he took the win over favorite Ja ck 0' Brien and also set the fas test heat time of the night with you ng John Hateley taking third. In the fourth heat and out fo r his !l r s t ti me on a speedway machine was top Novice rider Keith Mashburn who mad e it look li ke he had been doing it all his life a s he hea ded Eddie Wirth an d Pa t Gos ch. Right behind them and looking fora chance to get both of them was third place finisher Stu Morley. But the second time out , Pa ul s tayed in control a nd In a crowd-pleasing ba ttle of full-lock slides and ba ck s traighta way wheeHes a ced 0 ' Brien out for the win to keep Ja ck from ma king a clean s weep of al l his heats. Back-up man Scott brought home ei ght points In the ba ttle for Falcon supremacy while anchor man Rick Woods for the Flyers was the second highest poi nt man on his team with five points . With the Hghter cushion on the track, it seemed that the slides were better controlled than they were last week and the races were a lot clo ser and definitely more excl tlng as could be evidenced by the ripple of excitement through the crowd as each heat pulled to the Hne. As the Ascot sp eed way trac k is wider and longe r than ei the r the South Gate or Pa coima tracks , It Is safe to put s ix men on the lln e for each r a ce In the progress ive pr ogram which Is an other innovation that me t with the fans ' approval as It Increased the action and the thrllls con s lderably.
