Neither were the spectacular slides associated with speedway machines much I n evidence, and little passing took place In the 14 four-man, four-lap team racing events. Some changes to the track surface should shape this up, though. It was also difficult for first-time spectators to follow the team competition since neither riders nor machines sported numbers, but this facet of It could easily be solved If each member of a competing team wore the same colored [umber - with numbers. Conserriere, Keeter Top Scorers Paul Conserrlere and De Wayne Keeter of the Flyers were the winningestrlders of the night; both took all thetr heats and Paul grabbed the Trophy Dash from last place to boot. Top scorer for the other team, the Falcons, was Joho carter with 3 wins and a sec ond to his credit. F1nal sc ore was Flyers 54, Falcons 30. (A win counts for 3polnts,secondglves2polnts, and third place man gets 1 po int.) Following the team events cam e f our 6-man heat races, two 6-man semis and a s-man Handicap F1nal for non-team members. These proved to be the closest, most excltlng matches of the evening. Heat race winners were Sonny Nutter, Jack 0' Brien, John HateJey and E1Jlott Schultz, with the semis going to Bruce Haserot and Steve Scott. Then came a speclal2-lap matchrace between Schultz and Scott, with Elliott emerging on top and getting a new AgaJanian 98 helmet for hts efforts. Jack 0 ' BrIen was victorious In the 4-lap Handicap F1nal after overtaJdng early leader Sonny Nutter and staving off the bids of eventual runnerup Chuck Jones. Following Jones to the checker was Nutter ahead of Bruce Haserot, Jlm Posey and Steve Scott. It Is hoped that some of the opening night dIff1culties will be ov er come by this Friday so that all the close thrills and slidy styles associated with Class A speedway racing can be presented In thetr best light.
