JONES-JUMPS AT COOS BAY COOS BAY, ore., July 6 - Jake Jones of Reedsport didn't win all the races at Myrtle Point Fairgrounds track saturday night, but he Won most of the ones he entered. Jones rode his Suzuki to victory in the Sweepstakes race, took the 100Cc and 250cc class Trophy rashes, and the 250cc A Main. He was also a member of the team thai accepted Coos Bay's team challenge - and won. Ron Roberts , a new r ider from Sixes, placed first in two events , the 650cc Trophy rash and Open class A Main. This is a type of racing that hasn't been seen for many years until it was started a few saturday nights ago at Whiteman Stadium In P,jLcoimaand i s experiencing a loyal following of both fans and competitors. • This week has seen the installation of new grandstands at Trojan and the laying down on the track of a thick cushion of rock dust to provide the machines with the correct surface for the fabulous controlled slides that are the backbone of this type of racing. There will be a practice session this Sunday from 2:00 i).m. to 4:00 p.rn.; the gates will open for the racing at 5:00 p.m, and the program will commence at 7:00 p.m. The riders will be running for a 40% slice of the front gate plus a 40% of the pit gate atter the insurance fee has been paid. Admission will be $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for Juniors while the tykes will be admitted free. A bit of advice is to get there early for a choice seat. To reach the track, take the Firestone Blvd. East off-ramp from the Long Beach Freeway, go to the first tratflc light ' (which is Garfield), turn right and go to the first s top sign, Southern. Next race at Balboa Park will be Sunday, J uly 28 with practice at 12 noon and racing at 2 p.m , The 100cc Trophy rash went to J im Robertson of Lebanon who r eceived his trophy fr om lovely Wanda onsoto , First heat winner was Randy SCottof Corvallis with Bob Kutz a distant second. Second heat winner was J im Robertson, with Keith Kienle in the runnerup spot. The 100cc B Mai went to a first-year rider, thirteen-year- old Ron Denny, with Mike Bailey second and Mike Hubbs third. The 100cc A Main was a great battle between Robertson and Scott with Robertson finally getting by for the win; Randy came in for second, third was Kienle. The 200cc Trophy rash went to Ron Watld ns who received his award from trophy gal Kay Bryson. The 200cc heat race was again Watkins ', with Randy Scott in for second and Forrest Hiner getting third. Eight bikes started the race and only four finished as all had a lot of problems on the first laP. The 200 B Main was won by Danny Bo11n whoelected to forfeit his trophy and moved up to the A Main, giving the trophy to elevenyear-old Tommy Francisco, with Mike Wa tkins in for second. The A Main was won by Watkins with Bolln in for second and Scott coming ac r oss the li ne third. The 250cc Trophy rash was won by s ixteen-year- old Randy SCott, who once again was a very busy guy, riding in three classes. You could see Randy blush all the way up in the stands as Wanda presented him his trophy. F irst heat acti on was a near photo-finish be tween Mike Gregg of Vancouver, Washington and second place Jerry DeWitt of Junction City . Second heat went to Randy Scott with Mike Watldns in for second. The B Main was won by Jake Jones fr om Reedsport who moved up, forfeiting his trophy to Jerry Lambert, with Norm McFadden in for second. The A Main was taken by Randy Scott; Watldns was second, Gregg third. The Open Trophy rash went to Charles Standiford, who really got a grip on Kay Bryson when she presented him the trophy. First hea t winner was Butch Spinney with Jim Robertson in for second. The second heat ·was won by Standiford with Tom Montgomery r unner up. Ron Wyman too~ the B Main with Jim Kowalesld second and 0111e Wyman third, The A Main was won by Standiford with Butch Spinney second and Ji m Robertson third. The Wheel Walk1ng contest went to Ed Niels on, who defeated a stellar field . Powder Puff winner was our bildnl-clad trophy gal, Kay Bryson, as she beat out Ellen Denny. The Sweepstakes was won by roarin' Randy SCott, who cam e on s trong to win by half-a-Iap over the r est of the fie ld.
