on everything the Harley could give him,
out-gunned Van Leeuwen leavtnc the infie rd r1gbt-hander and took over the lead.
Mann got by Ahola into third and Ahola
almost lost it coming ott the s traight,
going r1gbt UP to the wall and hay bales
in a full-lock sll de. He malnta1ned control and gave chase wh11e Haaby nal1ed
Odom then Coppage, and Bostrom got
under Burres as he went high ott the
groove before the straight. Lawwill bullt
UP a small advantage then SkIp got his
second wind and closed the gap in DO
ti me to challenge for the lead, and lap
after lap he'd put his wheel right next to
the tly1ng San Franciscan but Mert had
the best l1ne through the corners and
time and again SkIp would have to drop

Into the first turn it was Burres in
front, leading Van Leeuwen and Odom,
but at the end of lap one Van Leeuwen
had taken over first spot. Out of turn
one and Into the 1ntleld pulled the two
number 4's, 4Q Mark WUllams , who had
a good front row start beside Burres
who had the pole, and the Mlch1ganfence
buster, Bart Markel, *4. WUllams had
pulled his rear valve stem on the start
and was DOW out, wh11e Markel's gearbox
had become scrambled and he too joined
the crowd sll:t1ng on the pit fence .

Lap twenty-five and the stands went

again pushed by Mann Into thir d and at

The 15-lapAmateur Championship was
a good go but no gr ea t battles or place
swapping came out of it.
Tom Rockwood (Trl) promptly set the
fastest quallty1ng time for the yellow
plates but Jim Rice (BSA) came alo ng to
do It one better. Mark Brelsford, the
Amateur winner one week before at
Portland, was next to last to quallty on
one of Jim Odom's spare Triumphs and
he demollshed everything before him
even though the r ig didn' t sound quite
r ight.
Amateur MaIn Event time found Rice
on the pole due to his fastest heat race,
along with Washlngtons' Jim Jo nes (Trl),
Mark Brelsford, and Dlve Smith (Trl).
It was Jones, incidentally, who rode the
last three laps of his heat race with a
small fire under his tank, and Rockwood
had hard luck as his Triumph blewwhlle
leading his heat.
Right ott the pole and int o the lead went
the Calltornia all-around rider (second
year Ama teur) Jim Rice, followed by
Jones, Cappy Skene, and Brelsford. The
pack strung out with a few bike lengths
between each pos ition and by the halfway flag Br elsfor d had passed Skene and
a lap or so later picked ott Jones for
s econd. Rice meanwb1le had and insurmountable lead of over a s traight-away
and calmly s troked his way totlrstplace.
Towar ds the last Brelsfor d' s Triumph
s ounded pretty bad and had Jones had
someone to wave him on he might have
caught and caPtured s econd but as It was
he foll owed Brelsford home third, Skene
