Van Leeuwen went on for his sec ond National Championship win, Mann once again sllpped by Into second, Ahola third, and there were no crashes during the entire 30-lap event. The 15-lapAmateur Championship was a good go but no gr ea t battles or place swapping came out of it. Tom Rockwood (Trl) promptly set the fastest quallty1ng time for the yellow plates but Jim Rice (BSA) came alo ng to do It one better. Mark Brelsford, the Amateur winner one week before at Portland, was next to last to quallty on one of Jim Odom's spare Triumphs and he demollshed everything before him even though the r ig didn' t sound quite r ight. Amateur MaIn Event time found Rice on the pole due to his fastest heat race, along with Washlngtons' Jim Jo nes (Trl), Mark Brelsford, and Dlve Smith (Trl). It was Jones, incidentally, who rode the last three laps of his heat race with a small fire under his tank, and Rockwood had hard luck as his Triumph blewwhlle leading his heat. Right ott the pole and int o the lead went the Calltornia all-around rider (second year Ama teur) Jim Rice, followed by Jones, Cappy Skene, and Brelsford. The pack strung out with a few bike lengths between each pos ition and by the halfway flag Br elsfor d had passed Skene and a lap or so later picked ott Jones for s econd. Rice meanwb1le had and insurmountable lead of over a s traight-away and calmly s troked his way totlrstplace. Towar ds the last Brelsfor d' s Triumph s ounded pretty bad and had Jones had someone to wave him on he might have caught and caPtured s econd but as It was he foll owed Brelsford home third, Skene four th.
