DEHESA HEAT WAYE Story and Pbotos by BU1 Harmer SAN DIEGO, car., July 14 - Tbe beat wave that discouraged work crews from preparing tbe course broke in ti me for a beautlful, comfortable Sunday at Debesa speedway. Tbe Hi Boots M.C. found a larger than usual number of entries waiting to sign up for tbe day's competition of tbelr monthly TT program. Practice turns d i s c los e d that the course was In anytb1ng but satisfactory condition so tbe HI Boots boys did some work on it before tbe first race. Lack of sufflcient time, bowever, prevented mucb impr ovement and only resulted in delaying tbe start of tbe program. Finan Flies There was sucb a large entry list In tbe Open Expert class that tIIey bad to change from tbe usual motos and run beats, semi and MaIn. Wayne Hosaka, on Mike Garrett's BSA,lookedgoodlnpractice and appeared ready to make a sertous bid for bls first win since competing as an Open Expert. Al F1Ilan also was baving one of bls be tter days and showed real pr omis e. Jim Har mon was stlll limping sligbtly but it did not seem to botber blm on tbe track and as usual Myron Carter looked cool and confident loS be pr epared to defend bls No. 1 status. Ascot star Mel Lacber ' s younger brother , Ron, was also entered In tbe event. Tbe Maln Event found Al F1Ilan off tbe Une first, closely foll owed by Hosaka, Harmon and Carter. As tbe r ace progressed F1Ilan and Hosaka got as far ' as 100 yardS ahead of third place runner, Carter. On next to tbe last lap, as be was coming out of tbe far sweeper into tbe straigbt, Hosalla 's machlne threw a rod througb tbe cyUnder wblcb allowed Carter to go on to an easy second place beblnd tbe flawless riding Al F1Ilanon Earl Roloff's smootb performing Triumpb. Al's brotber Don, whose r iding ahlllty is IISIIa11y concealed by mecbanicalfa11ure, bad bls Trlumpb in good sbape and won an impressive third. Powder P uff champion, Carol Cblara, proved ber cla1m on tbe No. 1 plate, turning b&ck all ber competition sk111fully handling ber Hodaka. Carol GoodIng and Susan saucber never let ber out of range bowever as tbey r ode tbeir Hodakas to second and third. Wayne Hosaka borrowed a Van Tech Hodaka and completely demoralized tbe 100cc Expert r iders, w1nn1ng all three and never being pressed seriously . Mickey Cblara , who bas been riding beautifully am ong tbe le aders tbe past s ever al weeks, again nail ed down s econd spo t, riding Jim McGulre' s r eed Induction Hodaka. Cbltwood, r iding a Don Vesco pr epared Yamaha, sbowed real talent to win tbe 250cc Mal n Event. Kawasak1- mounted J . Grace continued to improve by beating out bard- r iding Bultaco pilo t N. FREMONT, cal., July 7- Sportsman racing continued fast and furious at Fremont Raceway as tbe Fr emont Fam es M.C. took over tbe track from tbe Palo Alto M.C. to spons or tbeir firs t race of tbe year . Tbe program was well run witb tbe exception of som e sloppy flag wor k by various starters , wblcb caus ed restarts, overbeated clutcbes, ragged nerves and bloodthirsty yells from riders ,and spectators a11ke. Even a bad starter didn 't botber Paul Johnson, bowever . But tbe n, wbat does ? J ohnson, who is far ahead In tbe race for blgb point Expert In District 36, won tbe 250 and Open Expert beats , tbe 250 Maln, and was leading tbe Open Expert MaIn when bls El Bandldo gave out on tbe third Iap, That's what botber s blm - a machlne that won't run. But not mucb else. 10 tbe 250 beat be started' in third place, zapped sec ond place man John Silva in tbe tblrd lap and s wooped leader Bruce Teixeira, who bad been way ahead, on tbe f1na1 Iap, Tbe Open Expert beat was less trouble as Paul led from wire to wire, witb Lance Anderson on a 650 BSA tbe only competitor to s taY anywhere near blm . 10 tbe 250 MaIn Johnson also led tor tbe entire race, but Allen Kenyon on a PurSang stayed surprisingly clos e to Paul's Suzuld TM. Kenyon was Just as close In tbe Open Maln when botb be and Johnson were on El Bandldos. When Paul's macblne quit, Kenyon bad a big lead over the third place man , and be stretcbed 11 even further before be took tbe cbeckered flag. Tbe way Johnson and Kenyon tborougbly trounce super-tuned40- Incbers r idden by otber Experts is beginn1ng to make tha t old adage about tbere being no substitute tor cubic Incbes sound r idiculous . If cubic Incbes were going to count tbey would certa1nly do so at F r emont, whicb bles racing experience , and racked up an impressive win. Yamaha ace Ray Vanderpool put on a flashy riding exblbitlon but was unable to overtake blm and bad to settle for second. Bultaco rider, L. Blsbop outdls tanc ed the rest of tile field to claim tblrd. There were not enougb eniries for a 500cc class so all bikes In tb2.t class were entered in tbe open division I11&IdDlt the Open class into a conventional beat and Maln event type of contest. Wayne Butterf1eld got bls Triumpb off tile llDe In good position and went into an early lead in the Open Novice Ma1n Event. Ridi ng cons istently be maintained b1s commanding lead unttl next to last lap wben coming Into tile far sweeper, the rougb course caused blm to lose control and go off tbe track momentarily, allowing Bultaco-mounted D. E molton to squeeze by blm and win tbe race. lrOnlcally, But1erf1eld, who was making a bid for bls fir s t win of tbe year was one of the Hi Boots members responsible for tbe preparation of tbe track. W&YU8 says that bls bike is runnlng great DOW and be'll get In tile winner's circle yet. BSA Jockey J . Evan scampered across tbe f1n1sb tblrd. In spite of tbe r ougb track, wblcb some riders said made tbe races more iDteresting, tbe Hi Boots put on a very good pr ogram wblcb was exciting for both the r td ers and the spectators. As tbe dust slowly settled over the track and tile cyclists beaded tbeir trucks and vans bomeward, most were In agreement that it bad been a very fine day at Debesa. Carrillo Courageous Wblle Johnson was gr ea t as always, tbe best ride of tbe day . In terms of courage if not style, was turned In by Glenn Carrillo in tbe 200 Amateur class. Carrillo was leading tbe beat in this one by tbe lengtb of tbe straigbtaway when be looked back to cbeck tbe oppos ition, bit crossways bump, and went over the handlebars and on b1s gourd at about 50 mph, He suffered a badly brulsed hand and le g but managed to pusb bls Bultaco across tbe line In order to transfer to tbe MaIn. After bending bls macb1ne back Into sbape and visiting the ambulance for about three yardS of bandag e, Glenn went out and took first place in tbe MaIn after a tremendous bat tle witb J im McNulty, passing blm to take over tbe lead on tbe last lap l As usual, tbe 250 Amateur class was won by Scott Dlffenbaugb and bls very qulck SuzuJd TM. Scott won botb tbe beat and tbe Maln In this one, but new Amateur Jim Rice s taYed falrly close to blm In botb races . Maybe after Jim gets a tew mor e Amateur clasbes under b1s belt be will be able to give Scott a r eal run for tbe tropble s. Let' s hope so , because Dlffenbaugb's Invlnci b1llty is beginning to make tbls class ratber dull. Tbe 250 Novice MaIn provided plenty of excitement, bowever, as T . Moya, Pat Hurd an d Carl Trieste waged a threeway battle for ' tbe top trophy. There weren't mor e than tlve feet separating tbe thred Bultaco r iders wben tbey went througb tbe first corner, and that's tbe way it stayed for eigbt laps. Riding so clos e together, it seemed certain that one of tbem would fall or talter, but no one dld...an excellent r ide by all three men. Tbe 650 Ama teur class also produced some excellent riding as Eddie Garza did a beautiful Job of keeping bls Trlumpb ahead of tbe BSAs of consistent top f1n1sbers Mar io Rinaldi and Jim Cbls um. Tbe 100 and 200 Novice classes were s trictly "no contest" as Fred Bennett and Ivan Sblgemasa ran away fr om tbe rest of tbe field on tast Hodakas, and Don Cowles and Stan Cattott did tbe same in tbe bigger class on Bultaco Sherpas.
