Balboa, known for drag racing, now boasts a quarter - mile clay oval. The TT course uses the 1nf1 d and the far turn at el the oval. Sportsman r Iders in excess at 90 turned out for the first event. George F r anclsco, 110 newcomer to rac1ng, was the r efer ee. Spec1al f eatures included a wheel walk1ng contest, won by Ken WellIng bam . Next left and tt's onto the h1gh bank at the quarter-mile turn. Round that and down the chute to the f1n1sh Une. Mrs. Charles Cook collec ted the trophy I n the Powder Puff mota-cross . Th1s number one event for Balboa will begin a calendar at events through the rest at the season. For r I ders and spec tators alike It will be a great course. No mIstake, It Is a TT and to get around qulckly i s really a challenge. Be c a use of the weather the r Ider turnout at Balboa Park was sl1m, though twenty-six men and mach1nes did show up. The first loocc heat found Jake Jones at Reedsport holdlng off the rest at the pack to post the win and qual1fy for the Trophy I:B.sh. Second heat winne r, Randy Scott of corvanis , returned to take the tooce I:B.sh, defeating Jones in the pr ocess. Young and Eager The 200cc class eomprtsed at only 4 rIders and In the heat race 1t was all ll-year-old To mmy Franc1sco, as he got the lead at the flag and never looked h, back. The Trophy I:B.s however, was a dlfferent story. To mmy was a little slow off the starling Une and 16-year- old Randy Scott came on strong to collect the gold. FrancIsco cam e back strong in the Maln Event , though, to win over second place Mike Watkins in a fairly routine race. The first heat in the 250cc class was taken by Leroy Schmidt, wh11e the second heat went to Jerry DeWItt. TroPhy I:B.sh winner was Butch Spinne y. Randy Scott won the B Main but forfeited h1s trophy and thus Jake Jones was declared the winn er . The 250 A Main was the race at the evenIng as Scott got out last at the drop at the flag and f ought h1s way through traffIc to eventually battle Leroy SchmI dt fo r the lead, grabbing 1t one lap from the f1n1sh and holding on for an exc1ling win . Wheel- walk1ng champ was Larry Bessey f rom Los Ang el es, who defeated Jake Jones to take home the three-foot trophy. The Sweepstakes race went to Leroy Scbm1dt wi th To mmy FrancI sco in second. Sportsman racIng continues every Thursday at Eugene'S Balboa Park. (R esul ts on page 16)
