By Dick Wri ght Photos by Jeff Wright VICTORVILL E, canr., J une 30 - Mike Patrick , #7 on a Norton an d the Open Class point leader , came from behind to take the seventy-mile Desert Challengers Hare Scrambles in one hour and twenty min utes. The course was laid out like a tria ngle, with a check point at each point or the triangle; it was fast and s uperchoppy. The start was in Le Mans fashion, an d the banner was dropped witho ut an y delay, catc hing some of the r iders nappi ng. At the smoke bomb it was Lynn For tner, #506 on a360Husky, with Larr y Ber gqui st, #888x, close be hind on his 250cc Bultaco. Danny Kline on a new 360cc Greeves , got a good s tart and was fl at making it, preferring the rough boondoc ks - to the dusty main trail. Patrick had to kick his bike five times on the starting li ne an d was r unning twen tieth at the s moke. moved up to second. Ga r y Preston , #12 on a Tr iumph , was third, an d John Coots, #30, was fourth. On the s econd an d las t loop, Patrick remained in the first posi tion to come in for the win; Bowers took second and was first 250, John Coots had moved up to thi r d on the Triumph tuned out of Lamoreaux in Sunland . Gary Preston was fourth, also on a Tri umph, and Monte s a-mounted Tim Smith, #069, was the fir s t 500cc rtder ac ross the nne , Tom Potee t, #45x, was the fi rs t Ama teur in on a 250c c Bultaco, r unning l O th over all, and Ray Alexander , #144x, had a real good day, taking fi r s t 250cc Novice an d 15th overall. Harr y Lawrie, #227x, took second 250cc Ama te ur. Je rry Per kins, #25, jus t back from a twoweeks trip with the r eserves, had a good r ide, tak ing 18th overall on a 360 Husky. Wayne Peterson, #61, followed him in an d took first 500cc Amateur on a BSA s ingle .
