ANTELOPE RAMBLERS SECOND SADDLEBACK MOTO-CROSS Story by Maureen Lee Photos by Chuc k La Greca & Maureen L ee I RVINE, Cal tf'., June 30 _ We had hoped that the first moto-cros s the Antel ope Ramblers threw so well wasn't because of " begi nner s' l uck. " It wasn 't. Th e one last Sunday ran off just as smooth ly, in spite of an even larger turnout of riders and spectators, with trophi es gi ven away at the end of th e day. Th e course has been changed some what since its conc eption; dust is still a pr obl em but a water truck kept busy spraying parts of it Sunday which helped somewhat. Best part of all i s right after the scoring tower . Before, you n ew up th e hlIl and just kept on goi ng. Sunday , riders discovered there i s a neat li ttle cliff to drop off. Nothing at all if you can r i de and have your smarts about you but it was sure f un watchi ng the expressions on th e r i ders' faces first time Over in practice! They wer e also greeted by a neat little sign following the landing area r eading " What was that ?" One chap l ooked so dumfounded after he sur v ived a rath er rough landing that he DID turn around to see " What was that." We like . this addition to the cour se; the rougher the better. TWs is moto- cross, not a TT scrambl es, and only by gi ving the Novice rider a bit of a struggle are you goi ng to develop his talent. At th e risk of having our neck wrung by a few people we still want to see som e kind of a water hazard. Doesn't have to be a lake to swim through, but something that' s wet . Hodakas agatn walked off wi th the win s in the 100 classes . Don Greve, Bruce Nosbusch and Danny Hockie sett led down to three mo tes of" hard work and differ ent plac e posttions' each time to finish i n that order with Danny going on to take the lightwei ght sweepstakes win by doing in everyone In cludtng the Experts. David Aldana (Suzuki) riding coolly and calmly, feet up on the pegs and looking gr eat, took the first 100 A mateur- Expert moto and was leading the seco nd when his cl utc h gave up and Dave was out fo r the rest of the day . E .C. Birt on a beautiful little Van Tech Hodaka, Ear l Roesele r on a neat little Zundapp, Chuck Claydon on a Kawasaki all had a chance fo r that first but it was scrambles ri der Hayward Mend enhall (Hodaka) who took the wi n i n this small entry but hard-fought class . Tremendous Two-Fifty Turnout· Th e 250 Novices had a huge turn-out . Two f ull lines of them got away like The Charge of the Light Brigade. What happened up on the hlIl in the firs t turn was what happened to th e Br itish at Balaclaval Over half of them bi t the dust the fi r st time thr ough but despite this pileup ev er yone of them got goi ng again. With so many riders it soon becam e evident that whoever could come off th e line well and pt ck a pa th through the slower r i ders was in bus iness. Ray Banfield ( Yamaha) didn't do so well off the line and ev ery time was back in th e pack, but lap by lap yo u' d see that lilac jumper of his moving through the groups of r iders and pretty soon he was up there, taking home third place trophy fo r his efforts . Husky-mounted Barry Bloomfield won over all with Ken Greene on a Power Research Kawasaki in seco nd. We hav e to give a plug for the ri di ng sty le of fourth -pl ace man, T om Grant ( Husky) . He l ooked gr eat, but it seems to us that most Husky riders do look gr eat . '1 A s usual the 250 Amateur s and the rExper ts ran together and it's always in• teresting to see that there isn't that much of a diffe rence between the A mateurs and the Experts. Deser t ace Max Switzer on a Greeves won ov erall and f i r st Exper t with George Wal ker (Kawasaki and Power Research again) th e second Exper t . Bob May nard (Husky) was fi rs t Amateur and Larry Weise ( Hus ky) seco nd. Di ck Allen (Yamaha) was thi r d Amateur even after mi ssing the firs t moto and WlIlie Hockie (Ossa) fo ur th . pul led off the cour se, Lonnie weary but 0> looking ha ppy, up ca m e the Hus ky ri der ... to shake his hand and compliment the ~ .. ~~~f:~:n~~phi~k~i:;.:~ ~~~e~~:~ ~ it seems like too many peopl e take sporti ng r i ding too seriouslyl, So, by four -thirty all was over except for trophy presentations and bench r aei ng. Chuck Mlnert ( BS Just- I think I can, I A) think I can, and he did , In winnin g the Expert Class. and Bob Campbell wearing the Sham rock colors. We have a feeling that th e Shamrocks were the team winners Sunday although there were an awf ul l ot of Red Dots scooting ar ound, but only a few Stumpj umpers, Lost Coyotes and Check- ers . 100cc Novice ri der caught In mid-air as he leads fell ow riders over the j ump. The "big boys" were led home by Chuck Minert (BSA l, and as usual It was terri fi c r acing. I n the same class were Eddie Mulder (Montesa) , L on Peterson (Mai co) and John Kenton ( Husky) , et al, John Maynard ( Bul ta co) who alwaysgoes so well came ungl ued r i ght under the tower when he tangl ed wi th the side of a bush and a hay bale and it shook him up enough so that he was out of contention for th e other two rounds . Mulder showed some tremendous bursts of speed in spite of having throttle troubles the first r ound, but was taking a good l ook around for July 4 when he hopes to tangle wi th th e Europeans. Th e mac hi ne that impress ed us the most was Peterson's Maleo. In th e second mo to he blew ' em all i n the weeds and even Mi nert sai d" He star ted pul ling away f rom me and I j ust coul dn' t catc h him." We don't think i t will be l ong bef ore Maico is really on the scene. They flat m ove out ! Last race of the day was the heavywei ght sweep . Th e 250' s were moved up to this class and gi ven a head star t . Bloomfield ( Hus ky) bl azed away, holding th e l ead, but Pe ter son appeared on th e scene and started applyi ng the pressure. Bloomfield dr opped it ju s t before th e first of the ju mps and som ehow Peters on managed to miss him and th e Husky, sai ling on to th e wi n.
