Debbie Selden Is a pretty, young 16year-old motorcycle racer from Tacoma
Washington. She began racing motorcycles at tbe age of 12. competing in
Powder Puffs for a year and a half before
entering into sportsman events . She has
won over tbirty trophies, twenty of
which have been won since she began
competing on equal footing witb tbemale
racers two and a half years ago.
"The faster I can go, tbe better I like
it," Debbie says. "I'm usually tbe only
girl racing in tbe sportsman classes. I
don't Know of any otber girls in tbe state
wbo compete witb tbe men."
Debbie decided to enter sportsman
competition after winning several Powder Puff races a t tbe Olympia track.
She also races at Portland, Graham and
several otber tracks in tbe Nortbwest.
Last year Debbie rated second in sportsman points at Graham.
"I've always had a great desire to
win," she stated, • but It took a lot of
experience and belpful advice before I
began doing it. I Ilsten to good riders
and watcb tbem race. I consciously study
riders like Sonny Burres and Emil
Ahola, for example. My Dad has belped
me the most, he's really cool. I can't
see tbe mistakes I make when I'm in a
race, so be takes movies which we study
afterwards. I've learned a lot tbis way.
Lots of riders just follow the leader durIng a race and tben wonder after it's all
over why tbeycouldn'tgetaround. Things
like tbis are sbown up very clearly in
movies.
" I' m getling better as a racer. I used
to get tired in my arms and shoulders
from hanging onto tbe bil;
