HAULIN' FOR HURLIMANN AT MARYSVILLE One of the good guys around !be Marysville, (CRill.) bike track is S1dp HurUmann. He's been known for years as a friendly club member around the pi ts, but a hard wor king competitor out on the track. Fast moving as Skip may be, bad luck caught up with him a couple of weeks ago when he fell and broke his leg. To show Skip just how much Marysv11le thinks of him, a speclal benefit race was held In his honor on May 25, and 11 was a big suc cess. The race started after a wet track was worked down by trucks and bikes into s omething hard, s mooth, and just a UtUe this side of wild. LEADERS BEATEN IN BOTH CLASSES AT SOUTH GATE By Mike Ca pa li te The action was hot and heavy at South Gate, Cal .'s Trojan Raceway Wednesday night, May 29 as the point leaders were challenged DY up-and -coming riders who are picking up thei r lap tim es a little -rrnor e each week. As the s eason gets into summ er vacation time and the younger riders can come out because there is no school the next day, 11 is really going to provide some eXciflng racing as well as provide the track experience these rider s need . They will start out in the J unior class and then pr ogres s to the Senior class. In the i oocc Class it looked like Pa ul Wilde was out to make s ure ther e wasn't a repeat of1ast week's racing where he Heat race wfM er Skyler Shaff. was beaten out by Jimmy Raymond, who pushed his Yamaha to the heat race win and then to a win in the Trophy Dash. It was evident that he would be the man to beat in the Main Event, but as they took the "starter' s flag, it was Tom Warren, one of last year's riders, who was up on Paul 's rear wheel. Tom, who is on leave from the army before going to Vietnam, was one of the top r iders last year on his potent Bultac o, and 11 looked like six months of working for Uncle Sam hadn't slowed him down any as he stayed right behind Paul Wilde . Jimmy Raymond on his Suzuki had a bad start an d was in third place and was really pour ing the coals to It, trying to repeat his win of the previous week, when he devel oped a Utile adhes ion problem In the corner which left Tom an easy win. In the final laps, Pa ul's Y amaha seemed to besiowIng down as If it were starting to seize, but he was still ahle to bring it in for a well-deserved second place. Rex Mc Cleod on a Yamaha flnished third, while Frank Ching on a Kawasaki was fourth. The 250cc Main Event was worth the price of admission alon e, providing some of the finest racing yet seen at the South Gate track. Lee Stumpenhaus, whopr etty well has this track down pat, started out in his us ual manne r by winning the heat race and the Trophy Dash. Then in the The heats were all fast, but gave nothing more than a sUght clue as to who would win the race. Before the revealing Malns were held , a half-time show was put on by a few reluctant riders. Balloons were attached to their helmets, then their passengers were given rolled-up newspapers. Oncc they forgo t that they might look foolish, they got down to the business of havi ng fun. Being confined to a s mall ci rcle, they- " chas ed about t1l they caught up with each other , then proceeded to smash the daylights out of each other with the newspaper s , til the balloons popped. The team with the least tire tracks on thelr bodies won, but It was all in fun and the spectators enjoyed thems elves almos t as much as the r ider s . After a s ldeha ck made its rounds of the track and left Uke a r eal bike - on two wheels - the Mains " s tarted. The 100cc showed some tight competition between Ale x Jorgenso n of Stockto n and Jerr y Tyler of Sacram ento. They both moved away fro m everyone else with Tyler al ways ahead . Jor genson put the coals to his machine on the last lap, but still came in behind by only a length. In the 100-200 Amateur-Expert class Mike Ellis made his lead knownfrom'the start, but Paul Minor was hot behind him. In the second lap Mike moved SO far out that he was out of ever yone' s reach, although Jerry Baugh moved into second with his hopes once on first. The hot rider In the 200 Novice was Don Simons of Broderick, who managed to lap another rider to take first for his class. The 250 Novice saw Don Erickson looking like a wmner , but DougSizemore was close behind, waiting for just one s lip, and when 11 came, Doug moved out and held his pos ition for the win. Matty Plumb s natched the lead in the 250 Amateur-Exper t til he got a little wild In the corner and Dave Duarte manage d to take the lead for a win In the Amateur class . The 500cc class saw William Battaglia ( Novice) and Manfred Heyrend(Amate urExpert) taking clear firsts for their classes . Terry Briggs had first sewed up In the 65Occ, an d it looked like Skyler Shaff was a su re second til he unloaded in the next to last la p to give Bill Smi th second spot. First plac e winner for the 650cc Amateur-Expert class was Terry Hughes, but Dale Rich dld so me fancy legwork in the corner s trying to catch the leader. The races wer e a s uccess , and a wish was held by all the rider s that S1dp Hurllmann would s oon be back in action again. (Results on page 16) Main Event he got his usual jackrabbit start and took the lead on his Bultaco. Right behind him was Randy Ellis on the potent Honda tuned by Morgan Honda and although Randy rides hard, it is practi cally impos s ible to get around Lee on this track. He'S smooth and steady, makes it a point never to leave the gate open, and Is real handy at keeping riders behi nd him . As the race progressed, Randy quit trying to stuff a wheel under Lee and switched his tactics to the outside. Being the seasoned veteran that he Is, Lee was too smart to be drawn outside trying to block Randy so as to leave a hole on the Insi de for him to dive into. Can you imagi ne Lee' s surpris e (as well as the crowds') as Randy In a burs t of speed and full lock sliding took over the lead by getting Lee on the OUTSIDE. Even Lee was heard to comment later on the fact that he never though Randy would get him on Ihe outside. This seems to be the way the r acing Is going to run for the r emainder of the season, s o If you like exciting racing where you can s it In one spoi and s ee all the acti on, come to Trojan Raceway every Wednes day night. The 250cc main finished up with Carroll Skov on the Bultaco in third plac e and Donald La Mastus on a Yamaha In fourth.
