S teve was passed by Con rad, who placed second 250 Expert, and went on lor a well ea."ed third. St ory by Dic k Wright ~ ~ - Tbe San Bernardino M .C ., a new club with forty-three hard-working membe r s, picked a good area for their race; they had two courses with two races going most of the time. Course number two was four miles l ong, with very tight and deep sandwashes and a couple of sandy hills; low gearing and good knobbies were the answer . Course number one was three-and-a-ha1f miles, and was more open and fas t . Tbere were no rocks on either course, and the weath er was just r ight, with a little wind to blow the dust away. As always, there was a big turn-out for the Novice Trail Bikes; they went an hour on the #1 course, with Ji m Summers , #578, passing Terry Clark, #395, right at the last turn to take the win. I don't think Terry knew he was that close. Tbe Trail Bike Amateur-Experts went on cour se #2 at the same time, with Wes Anderson Jr., #4, showing a lot of class In tak in g the win on llls S.S. Hodaka, and F r ank Morgan , #6 0n a Hodaka, was pushIn g him all the way . Eric Jensen , #7, took third, also on a Hodaka. Nick Gula, #730 on a 360 C. Z . had to work his way up from fifth spot on the fir st loop of the Open Novice go to take the win with a bi g lead at the end. He was really handling that C. Z . In the tight sandwashes. Chuck Raudman, #893, was second, and Bob Melton, #337 was thlrd. Tbe 250cc Experts were r unning on the fast course, and Gene Canandy, #952x, had a big lead at the first check-point, with Larry Bergquist, #888x, running a distant second. On a close check It was l earned that Canandy mi ssed one deep sandwash and was dtsqualilled, but Ber gquist had turned It on as only he can do and passed Canandy before the flnlsh anyway. Tbe big race was f or second place, wi th Gary Conrad, #21x on a Suzukt , holdi ng It In th e early part of the race, but Gary Cole, #5x on a HuskY, seemed to have more pressure and was gaining ground with each laP, flnally passi ng Conrad on the fifth lap to take second. Lynn Fortner, #20x on a Husky, kept up a fas t, 'f eet- up pac e and put the pass on Conrad to com e In third, and Conrad took fourth . A t one-fifteen, the Combined 500 and Open Amateurs went off on the tight course. Lynn F ortner , #506, stlll an Am ateur In the Open Class, grabbed the lead r i ght at the start and had built It UP to three minutes at the f1n1shllne an hour later. Tber e was a good duel between Don Hinckley, #104 on a Triumph, and Dennis Ranipel , #31 on a 360 machine. ~ rhone (2'3) 346-3100 ~ J.N. Roberts, #2 on a 360 Husky, took the combined SOOcc and Open Expert go in the Mojave desert Sunday, June 9 with a thre&minute lead. Staats was running third and Gary Conrad, 1126 on a Husky, was In fourth. Rober ts kept building UP his lead , and Conrad passed Staats on the third lap, and then passed Gaetz on the tourth lap, tlnally taking over second position. To m Maxwell, #54, pulled fifth and second Open Class . Tbe San Bernardino M .C. had wellmarked courses, with good danger marks at the big ditches and road crossings. Tbe checks were well-manned, and the races went off like clockwork; also, It helped a l ot to be abl e to get the r esul ts from the club. Tb e team of HuskY riders out of Tracy's Shop In Burbank, had a good day, with a Open Amaleu r win, a 250cc Amateur wi n, and f irst and second In the Expe r t go.
