Severa! member s of the Cycle News staff Including Dennis Greene, Sharon Clayton and Bill Petti grewdecided to take a weekend of! fr om our journalistic drudgery to have an easy weekend campIng trip and a nice ride on the supposedly " can dy" poker run. Bob Dokes, president of the Ridge Riders, assured the staff members that the ,40 mile loop was easy enougb for a gi r l to ride. Well, as It turned out the 10: 15 start up the sandwasb to cbeck #1 was fairly easy but still managed to stop a few of the 95 entries due to their lack of experience In the sand. The country between cbeck #1 and che ck #2 was beautiful althougb there were severa! difficult bills for the female section of the group. It was after cbeck #2 that things really got to be a cbor e In spots, as the elevation was mucb blgber at lh1s point with a climb of approximately 800 ft. Incl uded In one quarter-mile section. The view from the top of Mt. Pinus was fantastic; one could see for close to one bundred miles down . througb the lusb green valleys and forests. RIding througb the pine-nettled forest on small trails with drops on your left and r lgbt of bundreds of feet left a few with rather queasy feelings as to forging on. Snow was found In patcbes In the blgh country only to disappear as fast as It bad appeared. The trip down the far side of the mountain proved to be a hairy one, with the sides of the mountain so steep that the club bad taken a shovel and dug paths a shovel In width across the steep banks of the mountain (what am I doing bere?). With a nice stretcb of paved road ahead after cbec k #3 we bad a short rest buzzing along wonder ing bow far the flnls b was. Suddenly the road r iding was finIsbed and a turn back to the dirt, and after we bad traveled severa! miles back Into the wilder ness we notic ed a small rancb of! to the left of the trail that stated, "No admittance , member s only, " and this turned out to be a nudist colo ny; lots of variety on ibi s run. After another 15 miles of twisty, rocky trails we emerged Into a meadowed area and picked up our last card, and finally on the finl sb at ca mp. TbIs r eporter was rather lucky and came In around 1:00 p.rn, Bes ides my pants being ripped fr om the crotcb to the knee, leaving my br eakfast on that **#$% mountain, crasblng and bending the for ks, and last but not least, throwing my chain, It was a satisfying tour before lunch, (HA.) Well, the other two mem bers weren' t so lucky as Sharon Clayton was br ought down from the mountain after making It farther than some of the men . Dennis Greene, after being delayed by Sharon, decided to forge ahead and finisb ibis *$ run It Idlled blm . Dennis pulled in on bls li ttle Yam aha trailblke around 6 p.m, with a total of 8 bours on the mountain , and we pried blm from bls mount. After a Uttle r est and cleanup the wbole IbIng didn't look as bad and It was unanimously agreed that the run was a complete success, althougb 22 didn't flnisb, and we are looldng fon.=d to going up again to see what Idnd of run these super-In-shape Ridge Ride rs will have In store. Several nice looldng tropbles were distributed Including to yours truly and of! we went, back to the Jour nall s tlc drudgery . .. . .. _ _ _ : SALES SERVICE PARTS WESTMINSTER SPOilT CYCLE 7574 WESTMINSTER AVE.
